Hi Everyone,
I am a current medical student in Ontario, Canada, and I was hoping for some guidance regarding an issue I face with my vision and the long-term implications it will have on my medical training. As a child, I was diagnosed with Strabismus and underwent corrective surgery that was successful. Nevertheless, I failed to develop binocular vision and lack stereopsis. I am highly interested in pursuing Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery or Urologic Surgery, however, I am wondering:
1) Is anyone aware of programs in these specialties screen for stereopsis during their interview processes.
2) Honest opinions on whether I should continue pursuing such residencies.
I have never had an issue with my vision and I have been successfully using other monocular cues to make up for the lack of stereopsis, however, I am unsure if this will suffice to become a successful surgeon.
I really appreciate any honest input people can provide, as this is a very critical choice for me to make. Thank you.
Best wishes
