Laid-Back/Easy to get along with People

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For sure rads. Except the interventional rads guys... they're like surgeons on steroids.

Stay away from Heme/Onc guys... they're extremely brilliant people... and I owe them my life. But... they're NOT chill. NOT AT ALL.

I was sad to see this because I had an amazing time shadowing a Heme/Onc doctor and his PA. Maybe he was an outlier.

Yeah, I had a good time shadowing a Derm who used to be a Heme/Onc.

Not challenging in terms of thinking though. More like challenging in the sense that you have to essentially be a psychiatrist, social worker and know a little about everything.

Lots of fam docs get dumped on... patients just come in and they let rip. The cardiologist doesn't care that your husband's cheating on you.
I think FM docs would disagree with you; the breadth of knowledge one has to retain and utilize for FM, especially in rural areas, is no small stressor on one's intellect.

Not the FM docs I know... but your argument stands... rural areas yes.

In and around large academic centers... FM doc philosophy... When in doubt 😕... REFER!

Def not EM, I would imagine being laid-back is not a prized quality in emergency room physicians. Maybe anesthesiology.

Not true. Most of the EM docs I work with are super laid back. I mean they work hard of course, but it takes a lot to get them riled up, like someone carrying their own evisceration content through triage

Chill and laid back... definitely Psych, Anesthesiologists, and PM&R... no doubt.

Now, I know a lot of EPs... and most of them are chill in the sense that they're not douchebags like some surgeons. But they are usually ADHD types... very sociable, like to keep busy and moving.

Also... ortho's are NOT laid back... in general they're high strung and worrying about getting in that ACL before tee time.

I've been doing some thinking on medical specialties now that I've been getting interviews... it seems like Anesthesiology offers me a plethora of opportunities. I can be an expert in physiology and pharmacology. I get to be in the OR, and I can work in an ICU if I do so please. Then there's the added benefit of doing pain management. And honestly, alleviating pain is something that many people require desperately... let the internists figure out the root cause of the pain. I can make a decent living, afford to send my kids to good schools, take a nice vacation here and there. And support my science fiction habits... comic con etc. Plus I can watch my kids soccer game on the weekend... needless to say any specialty can afford you this type of lifestyle if you play it smart. But to me it seems people in gas love their lives.

I agree with the Ortho statement, other than tee time. It's usually another knee or shoulder. Or on-call to the ER for everything from ankle sprains, hip dislocations.

The anesthesio ideas seem like pretty wishful thinking to me. I'm not knocking your optimism, but dealing with drug seekers is not a lot of fun, and will wear on you really quickly. Then, you're always a consult for those late night ICU/trauma admissions. The doc I know is hilarious, but I don't know how he does it, working 90+ hours a week. Probably helps to have an empty ring finger. This might be different though, if you work somewhere that isn't underserved, and have other anesth. specialists (5+) that can levy the workload.

Just my 0.02...

Sorry blu, I hate to disagree with you on this one, as well. The variation is as numerous as there are docs. There are docs like the one in the comic, who are totally a space-cadet, but in FM, and any other specialty, for that matter, you can be as cerebral as you want. One could argue that it is harder to look at the entire picture, and develop a plan, rather than see a problem you've dealt with a hundred times, and fix it.

I don't know why, but I imagine trauma surgeons to be dicks.

At least in Gas/Surgery... you get quantifiable and tangible results because the patient is compliant, they signed a consent form. Basically... here, take my body... knock me out... tune me up. Then go back to eating double big macs and wondering why you need another triple bypass in 2 years. But c'est la vie.

👍

In my experience Ophtho is the most laid back, with Derm coming in a close second.

Eh, they're more high strung than anything.

I don't think so at all, they are usually so jaded after having practiced for more than 15 years, it really takes something interesting to get them excited.

And yes, my experience is about 50/50 with trauma surgeons either being complete A-holes, or really down-to-earth fun people.

Hm, interesting. They are usually high strung or really cool guys from my exp. In fact, I've only experienced non-niceness(?) from like older nurses.

Absolutely. When I volunteered in the ER for a few months, I was basically CT/MRI/Ultrasound transport b*tch and got to know them very well. Just the funniest people in the hospital, and I went from hating transporting patients to looking forward to it.
Same, the CT guy let me sit in and showed me the scan he was doing. The MRI guys did the same and cracked jokes quite often. They were all pretty laid back. They weren't physician specialties, but still it seemed to have the chillest folks.

Same with the IM docs (mainly hospitalists) I've talked to. They make a fraction of the $ their specialized counterparts are making... Buff and turf.

meanness... I think, lol.

Some of the older nurses are mean, but I think the meanest nurses are the BSN-toting charge nurses that "run the ED". Four years of total clinical experience, but they've seen it all kind of folks... Oh well.
