I am very curious as to see how people feel about LANAP: laser assisted new attachment procedure. It is a lot less invasive with higher patient acceptance compared to conventional perio treatment.

It seems like more and more periodontists (and some GPs) in California and NY area are doing LANAP right now. I guess I am still a little bit skeptical about how effective it is and if it is indeed worth the hefty price tag.

Just wondering if anyone has any first hand experience with LANAP and would like to chime in.

What do they tell you residency? I know there's not a lot of research and what is there is sponsored by the company (Millenium) and is probably slightly biased. I know this is a pretty heavy topic on Dental Town and there's a lot of debate. Obviously the AAP hasn't endorsed it yet but there's a lot of anecdotes of it's effectiveness.Do you use it to treat localized defects or run it through the whole mouth since it "disinfects" ? Lots of debate, but not sure if it's the magic bullet its being hyped up to be.

Dr. Greenwell is currently conducting a LANAP study but so far we only have preliminary results. We have another part-time faculty, Dr. Lowy, who uses LANAP exclusively to treat periodontitis and he is quite happy with the results.

Yukna was the first one to publish results on LANAP but his study used step-serial instead of serial sections so it was heavily criticized for if LANAP was actually able to achieve "new attachment" consistently.

At this point, like you said, no one really knows. Patient acceptance is much better with LANAP compared to traditional osseous resection. I personally have seen a couple cases with LANAP and the results were pretty similar to conventional perio treatment. However, I feel like I need to see more patients in order to actually determine its effectiveness.

This is the general theme that I hear from people that have used it. I know a few guys that swear by it but they are the same kind of guys that strike me as part-time used car salesmen.

Is Greenwell studying it independently or is it part of the multi center trial that's going on with the quadrant design?

There's a proof of principle article by Nevins which I'm sure you guys read in Current Lit that showed regeneration in some of the samples, but I think the summary is that the jury is still out whether or not the $120k laser/protocol is better then a 10 cent 15c blade....

It's part of the multicenter study.

Do you guys get to treat these patients or is it limited to just him? Any comments on the study from a design, patient flow, company involvement, preliminary results angle? I'd love to hear anything and everything... PM me if you would rather
