is there a resource with some landmark gen surg papers / important trials to read up on?
Yes. There is a book titled "Landmark Papers in General Surgery" (not being sarcastic) that is pretty good.
$72 on amazon marketplace including shipping. http://www.gettextbooks.com/isbn/9780199644254/
Its a nice book with a synopsis of each article, related references, important tables and figures and a critique. I bought it with book money this year as I have most of the other texts I need. Worth the investment IMHO. I don't have anything like what you are asking for. This one will stay on my shelf even when I go into vascular (the vascular section is quite good too).
Do you mind sending me the list of what they have in there for vascular? I'm actually very curious. As part of our didactics re-design I made a 'landmark paper' list and then assigned each resident/fellow to do a synopsis of one each. Curious how closely my list is with theirs.
