Unless you're taking some programming calsses, you're not going to need anything top-notch.
a $400-$600 lenovo with 6 hours of battery life per charge will work wonderfully.

Depends on what you want the laptop for. Is it a desktop replactemnt that just sits in your room or will you be toting it around to take notes on. Where do you like to use your laptop? Will you be using it just for class or for recreation as well?

Personally I use my laptop for not taking so I have a convertable tablet pc.

Ideally I would tell you to get an inexpensive laptop with good battery life and don't get one that is huge or it will never leave your desk. (12.1 inch widescreen is a good size in my opinion but certainly something under 17 inches)

There are many PC computers around the $400-700 range with incredible hardware now a days. I'm positive that you will be fine sticking within this price range and being able to handle your math and science programs easily.

Go and find the one that looks the nicest. Honestly, it isnt going to matter much.

get a mac, it is the best computer ever and it will last you a really long time

Tablet PC, you can take notes in class (math included) and write on powerpoint slides that almost every lecture besides math uses. Good luck where are u going?

As I always say, I'd get a ThinkPad or a Dell business model. Macs are good but expensive. Tablets are tons of money for worse performance and a crappy feature. Give me an indestructible, reliable non-flashy machine any day.

I have a Toshiba and it's pretty awesome. The screen's cracked (my mom threw something at it), but it still runs beautifully. Tablets are overrated and macs are overpriced.

If anything, durability should be your main concern. You're going to be taking your laptop everywhere, and you ARE going to drop it. I've dropped this thing like 100 times and there hasn't been any lasting damage (knock on wood).

so for the tablet, is it a matter of getting comfortable with it? i was playing around iwth a friend's laptop and the tablet feature seemed kinda slow/awkward...

i will be taking it around for notes, prob graphing stuff and music/pictures/movies...

i am going to university of pittsburgh..GA into med school also
