I'm looking at the VCU secondary right now from last year: "- Please briefly explain any lapses in your undergraduate education"

Would things that affected your academic performance count (i.e. jobs, deaths, lawsuit)? or is this talking about lapse in terms of time?

I believe they mean whether you've taken any time off during college (e.g., taking a semester off to take care of a sick family member).

Yep. Time away. I had a 2 year lapse for a church mission and none of the schools seemed to mind.

Yep - time lapses. However, as someone who had "academic issues" in college, I would recommend that, if you have such issues that are obvious to anyone who looks at your transcript, you address them somewhere in your secondaries (not primary app). Heading off these issues early might keep your app out of the "easy reject" pile.
