I will be a first year in Loyola next July. I know they have their LUMEN network, where everything from lecture notes to elective schedules in accesible online. However, I have never before had a need for either a laptop or a PDA.

For those who attend Loyola, or anyone whose gone through MI and MII, do I need a laptop and/or a PDA? Are notebooks no longer the trend?

I haven't shopped around for the most practical Laptop or PDA... but if I do need one, which ones are actually useful and a good value?

Thanks

hmm...so i figured i'd resurrect this old post with no answers instead of starting a new one.

i'm going to be an M1 at loyola this fall. starting to look for a computer. do i need one? assuming i get one, would a laptop be worth it? what do most students have? if i get a desktop, would i wish i had a laptop? any help / advice from current loyola students or others with an opinion in the matter would be most appreciated.

I'm not at Loyola, but can tell you with 100% confidence that no M1 needs a PDA.

A laptop is nice to have for email, writing papers, etc.

Don't buy anything. No computer, no PDA, no diagnostic set. The only thing you'll want is a stethescope.

Brats,
I was just about to yell at you about doing a search, when I realized you revived an old post. That was smart thinking. Good job!!!!

As for the answer, can't go wrong with the small laptops now, if you can't choose.

Laptop - yes
PDA - no (PDA for MS lll)

laptop, at my school it is a requirement for all incoming MS1. Everything is online and it is quite convenient to write notes in your ppt or pdf. I have not seen "many" medical students writing notes in notebooks but some still do this...

pda is not necessary for baseline M1 stuff, but can definitely come in handy if you have more going on to keep track of. i'm at the end of my M1 year, and just took over leadership of one of the most active student orgs on our campus. suddenly have a lot of tasks and meetings to keep track of on top of school, also am planning a wedding... a PDA is starting to look pretty good as my paper schedule/organizer is getting a little out of hand. i think i am just going to go with a real basic palm. no bells and wistles, not too expensive.
