Hey guys,

I wanted to know what a good laptop would be throughout medical school. I currently have an old macbook air which I need to replace.

I am looking at a macbook pro, windows lenovo thinkpad, or lenovo ideapad (y580 looks pretty good). I am also considering a tablet but already have an iPad so I may be able to use that as well. Thanks!

I saw it, but I wanted comments regarding the specific laptops I mentioned.

Fair enough but I'm not sure it warranted another new thread. After all, since I'm in the market for a new laptop myself, have read the thread and I'm fairly sure they specifically mentioned MBP and the Lenovos in thread.

Conventional wisdom is that the MBP is more than you need and expensive (and I'm an Apple fan girl); Lenovos good value.

For me, Mac OS X is very much worth the price of a MBP, especially if you also have an iPad or iPhone. The retina screen is also nice. I would get the middle 13" rMBP with 8gb ram and a 256gb hard drive. Whatever you do, do not get less than 8gb of ram; it will not be enough in the long run.

I switched to a MBP about a year ago from a Thinkpad (Lenovo) and had another Thinkpad prior to that. I don't think either of them is clearly advantageous; it just depends on what you're looking for. A good quality Thinkpad (the T series) is very durable and can have some pretty powerful hardware in it. However, they tend to be bulky and pretty ugly though they seem to be making changes on that front. Since you're familiar with Apple you know what you're getting with a MBP. They're way overpriced for what they are, but they're absolutely beautiful machines, and OSX is just awesome.

I wouldn't get an IdeaPad. Those are the crappy consumer lines that are no better than your typical HP/Compaq/whatever that you can buy at Walmart (read: absolute garbage). Invest the money to at least get a ThinkPad - it'll be more durable and you'll get more time out of it.

I would't get another tablet, but that's just me.

What's wrong with the MacBook Air ?
