i think it depends upon the school u go to.. u prob have a better luck asking current students of THAT school....

one school i talked to requires a laptop.. because they make u do ur exam on the laptop sitting in class...

plus wen u move away to attend the pharm school..laptops r useful n easy to carry! 🙂

You'll need a computer, but at my college, very few actually bring one to class. Some schools have specific laptop requirements. See if you are applying to anyone of those schools, and if you are wait until you are accepted to see what they want.

Our school requires you to buy a laptop-- you have to get this certain one, and they are distributed at orientation. I haven't really found much of a use for it yet outside of the fact that many of the instructors post documents with Microsoft Word 2007 I think (or whichever one has the .docx or .pptx... I think I actually have '07 so it's something different, but I don't know what).

So I can't get those documents that have the "x" after them off my home computer. But I really hope that maybe there will be more of a use for them in second year, or else I'll be like you know I could have just save like ~$1200 and just bought the software that they use.

My school gives you a laptop for P1-P2 years, then you get a new one for P3-P4.

I bet it was a Dell laptop. Dell gives schools special deals in exchange for them pushing Dell computers onto students.

You don't need a $1600 laptop to run the latest version of Office.

It is a Dell this time around, but they reevaluate the sponsor every two years.

ISU requires all students to have a laptop (we take some of our tests online through a program called Moodle). Most people I know bring their laptop everywhere - I use mine several times a day, especially in case studies. It helps that I got a small, portable laptop (this one). Some of my classmates have the big 17" laptops, but I would hate to lug that around.

Even if your school doesn't require a laptop, I'd consider getting one. But you don't need a fancy, $1500 laptop - you can probably get a decent one (look for sales at Dell or other sites) for $600 or less.

Go to www.microsoft.com/downloads and download the Office Compatibility Pack and then you will be able to open older Microsoft Office documents with Office 2007. The pack is free!

I know, this is exactly what I mean. And unfortunately---that is the only real purpose I am seeing for my laptop right now (outside of minor conveniences... which to me are not worth $1200... I'd rather have the money to buy clothes or video games).

Both schools I interviewed at (Shenandoah and Campbell) give you a laptop to use and then keep....
