I have been wondering the same thing. At UTHSCSA we have two choices: Dell PC or MacbookPro. I am thinking of making the switch over to Mac... does anyone have any insight into what I should choose? I am used to PC because it's all I've ever used. However, my PC crashed twice in the same summer 2 years ago and I had to get my operating system re-installed. I am little skeptical on getting another PC because of that, but at the same time, I am a little skeptical on getting a Mac since I have never used one. Anyone that transitioned over from PC to Mac have any trouble? Do you find it difficult to download documents that might be in a format for Windows PC (ie: powerpoint lectures) or is there any difference at all?

no offense...but can you make your own thread about macs vs pc? I don't care about that bc i know i want to stick with a pc. I just want ppl to compare pc's that they have. I know ppl are very passionate about their "mac vs pc" and i didn't want this thread going that direction. Thanks

Most programs for dental related stuff outside of dental school are pc friendly so I would jsut stick with a pc.

I have 2 buddies working at geek squad and they both said toshibas are the best...they ususally never get brought back for service etc.

Go with a 14 inch toshiba satellite. www.deals2buy.com ususally shows many laptops for good prices from stores like best buy , office depot, staples etc and sometimes from online places.

I made the switch to a Mac as an undergrad and I absolutely love it. Not trying to turn this into a Mac vs. PC thread, but I haven't had any problems downloading powerpoint lectures or anything related to school, so if that is your deciding factor I wouldn't worry about it. Macs and PC's are very compatible.

My intention was not to make this a Mac vs. PC debate. I noticed the thread and it discusses laptops, and I figured since this is a public forum, I could post a question as well, on a thread with similar regards (ie: laptops) and hope someone could answer my question in addition to yours. Sorry.

Get the IBM, they will LAST for your entire school and beyond. Their service is the best.

Apple. Best customer service, best user experience, best design, and runs the world's best and most advanced operating system. What more can you ask for (and if you get it during the summer, chances are, Apple will include a free iPod)

I would stay away from Sony. They are way overpriced for what they offer. Their customer service and support is horrible and I question the quality of their product after the battery recall last year.

Anyone know why the laptop at BU (mandatory) is $1800? The price seems excessive because I recalled you can get a Toshiba laptop on black friday for $300. What brand, specs, porn, and dental software do they give you?

Funny. No porn, you got to download your own!

My friend, the dental software is an extra $3600 a year. Every school has their own specific model. UNLV, where I am going used to give out IBM Thinkpads, then two years ago they switched to Dell Latitudes. I liked the Thinkpads, not the fanciest or the shiniest machines out there, but they served well. The Latitudes look nice, but its an overpriced Dell. I am guessing they will be using the Latitude D620 this year. Let's see.

Definitely. Consumer Reports always ranks Apple at the top in customer service. If I had to pick a Windows based laptop, it'd have to be a Thinkpad. Those things are rock solid. I have one thats 7 years old and still going strong even through all the abuse I've subjected it to.

Ever notice how most Mac users are skinny? It's because of all the calories they burn because they can't shut the **** up about how great their Macs are. What is it about Apple that makes its users unable to shut their mouths?

All in good fun 😛

The best system to get is the one that you are at least adequately able to use and one that is good for the money. There are both macs and pcs that suck so for sure try it out at the store and see if you are confortable with it. If u like gaming, you might find it hard to make use of a mac unless you are saveyenough to partition the drive. Or just get a dam pc and save your self the trouble.

Why can't they shut up? A principle called cognative disonance. Basically, if what you believe and what you do aren't in harmony, it causes distress, so one or the other will change. Typically beliefs are more likely to change than actions. So, if you just spent a whole lot of money on a funky piece of art that doubles for a computer, you have two choices:
1. feel bad about your purchase and remain devoted to PC's
2. become the newest spokesperson for said funky computer.

(by the way, I'm just kidding around. Sort of).

Haha...hilarious!

Or maybe it's just because us "mac users" realize that there are a lot of idiots out there who would be better off using a mac instead of being hopelessly devoted to their pc's? Most people who bash macs haven't even used one in the last 10 years!!! As a previous PC devotee, I can honestly say that I will be happy if I never have to use one again.
When you go to a really incredible restaurant, or some other outstanding experience....human nature is to tell other people about it so that they can share that same thing. Funny, but my Powerbook cost me nothing...but I still rave about it!

My sister has a Macbook, and I've used it fairly extensively when I've been back at home for breaks.

Comparing her macbook to a similarly priced PC, well, it's night and day. It feels like I'm using crayons when I'm used to a fine tip pen.

But hey, crayons are easy to use. And they come in some pretty cool colors 🙂

isn't it also harder to find pirated software/movies etc. for mac? pc saves money 🙂

Mac laptops look good, but since I know PC more...i'm going to stick with PC. I got an IBM thinkpad (T40), it's been good for 4 years. I had to replace the fan but that's about it.

dells are terrible, go with toshiba, sony, or hp.
