Hey, I think I have decided on gettn an IBM thinkpad. Can those that have them or have used them help me out on deciding which one. I am wondering whether it is worth the extra cash to go ahead and get the tablet version or just stick with their typical laptop. Thanks

I've used Thinkpads and I think they are the best out there. I have the t43, but if I had to buy it again I would get the Z series only because of the tablet feature, battery time and weight. The Z series costs more, but its a better investment. Provided you don't get a CD/DVD built in and have to dock it to it's station to use all the ports. I think that is a minor sacrifice. You don't want to be lugging along a 4-5lbs laptop, when you can get a 2-3 lbs one. Good luck with whatever you decide.

When you are jolting down notes, and all of a sudden the professor draws a graph or some minor diagram what are you going to do? A. take out your pen and paper and note it. B. Use your stylus to draw the diagram electronically on your tablet.

The tablet just adds the convenience of both worlds.

why? because you can annotate right on PPT slides without printing them out. If only Apple came out with a Tablet...

I have a Thinkpad (IBM) and my wife has a Inspiron (Dell). She's had problems with it since day one, and I've only had my CD-RW quit working, and I had that replaced for free. The way I see it, if you are going to spend $1500-2000 on something, why not spend a few hundred dollars more and get something reliable and solid built.

Lenovo recently bought the IBM Thinkpad and Thinkcenter divisions of IBM, however the change is just cosmetic because even when IBM made them, Leonovo was the one still manufacturing them.

Can anyone else give their opinion? Especially d3's and d4's...who have experience with what works and what doesn't...(eg what's important in a laptop for dental school and what's not)

Get a macbook. Especially when Leopard comes out and you can boot to windows on boot camp.

Otherwise, if you decide on a tablet then get a tablet. Just a big PDA in my opinion though. And convertables kind of defeat the purpose.

Get a mac.

No matter which laptop you get, it's not going to make a huge difference. Getting and IBM over a Dell will not be the difference between barely passing all your classes and being number 1 and acing the boards.

What you need is a computer THAT YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH. Get down to a Best Buy and see what you like. Check out consumer reviews, and for the love of god make sure you get something reliable, with a 4 year service plan (on site would probably be the best).

The last thing you want is a computer thats out of commision for two weeks because you have to send it to Bangalore, India to get fixed.

Boot camp is garbage btw, if I wanted to run windows at molasses speed I'd go back to 1999

Thank all of you so much for your responses. I think I have decided what I am going to go with. I just found out that the school I am going to has a special program with Lenovo. It's an amazing deal: T series with Dual Core 2 processor, 2gig of ram, 4 year on site protection/warrenty plan, and Microsoft office for $1600! That is almost $1000 cheaper than going through Lenovo directly. So I am pretty excited about that. Good luck to everyone else who is trying to figure the whole laptop thing out. I agree with the previous post...go with whatever you are comfortable with...you are going to be spending a ton of time with it. Thanks again

you obviously have never used a Mac....

I can even run Windoze at a sufficiently high speed inside Mac OS X as a virtual machine while having multiple programs opened in OS X. When running under Boot Camp (which is still BETA by the way....and I'm sure it will be completely optimized when Leopard comes along), the speed is equivalent to the speed you get on a similarly configured PC laptop.

by the way, Vista is the biggest POS bloated operating system ever put out. It's basically XP with some features Microsoft copied from OS X.

I have used macs before, and I used Windows on bootcamp, and wasn't particularly impressed with either. We could sit here and wax all day about which system is better, but niether of us is going to change the others mind. Windows may seem inelegant to you, but realize that OSX feels like crayons to me.
