In my search for a good laptop, I ran across this program and wanted to share with others.

Basically, send in an old dell, and get $500 off a sony. Send in any other old laptop and get $350 off a sony. My dad just used the program so it is legitimate. From what I hear, sonys are way better than dell anyways.

👎 Nope. Dells are the best. My dad works for government information technology, and they do extensive research on the matter. They use exclusively Dell products.

I have a gateway. Not bad at all. I am more or less happy with it. The only problem is its huge 15'' screen. Now I need something small and light.

I have an IBM PC and they work really well. I have a Dell at home it works fine for internet and SDN. Nothing special.

I have never had any problems with my Dell. However, the smallest laptop that Dell makes is currently the 12.1" 700m. I want something under 3 lbs. The Sony Vaio TX series is awesome, especially the 11" laptop. I'm basically looking for a hot deal on ebay, hehe.

hey, dells aren't so bad. my inspiron notebook lasted a good three years before going downhill. it still works, but it's moved to the noisy old machine world. i have an ibook now and dig it. cheap, long battery, light weight -- honestly that's all i care about.

I have a few pals with them. They seems awesome. They just use it as their school notebook and take all their notes on it. They download class powerpoints and write on the presentations. They both love it.

I have a tablet and justlove it! I'm writing this right now w/ handwriting. I take all of my notes on it. It is awesome for quickly searching my notes. There are some great features on the horizon with MS office. I don't recommend using your tablet to take notes until after your 1st quarter (or until you get the hang of med school). Each lecture the professor will say at least once "this is a common boards question: I flags it for future use. It will be easy to search. Check it out.

Toshiba's are consistently ranked the highest for customer satisfaction on consumer reports. They are also the most affordable.

I have decided to get one of these, after doing alot of research-employing a friend who is very computer savvy-I have narrowed down my chi=oice to the Toshiba Protege and the Fujitsu 4200. WHich ones do your classmates have? Also any input on tablets would be appreciated.

I have a Gateway and I just love it. It is running about $l000 Very nice. I wouldn't get a small screen. Get a 14.1. You'll be glad you did.

I would recommend a 11" screen. I say this for portability. It's a huge pian to lug around a big laptop. Even 12" laptops can sometimes be heavy (5+ pounds). Get a Sony Vaio 11" screen, which weighs under 2.5 pounds.

Then, just get a nice big monitor so you can hook it up when you are home. Get a monitor that is also a TV so that you can save space and money.

If you get a docing station, then you can just grab your labtop when you are leaving home and just put it back when you return home for the instant large monitor and easy to use keyboard;-)

My Toshiba was the shortest-lived of any laptop we've had in my family. I was very disappointed.

I'm a huge fan of the smaller laptops (including smaller screens). The bigger ones are obnoxious to carry around. My husband doesn't like the little Vaio as much, though, because the keyboard is small, too.

However, keep in mind that the Sony Vaio offers the smallest notebooks in its class. Also, the battery life is an amazing 7.5 hours. With most laptops, you are lucky to get 3.5.

With the Sony Vaio TX series, sure you are not supposed to write the great American novel on the keyboard, however when you have it home just hook it up to the docking station and use any keyboard/monitor you want.

It truly provides the ultimate mobility.

Agreed. I'm wishing for a powerbook, but I probably won't end up with a new computer just yet.

I own a laptop but never bother bringing it to school. There are plenty of computers available on campus. Since I almost exclusively use my laptop at home, a 17" powerhouse really would have been ideal for me in hindsight. For those in the market for a laptop who care about performance, I would wait for new systems with the Intel Core Duo processor. In the coming year all the high-end laptops (including Macs) will be converting to these processors, which should offer much better performance than current computers.

the new mac powerbook pro is out..which is supposedly 3 x faster then the old ones..and best yet..they have intel chips in them..i didnt do enuff research on the battery life, etc...but you have to admit..ibooks look sexy as hell

as for me..i'll just buy an extra battery or two for my dell...right now its cranking at 5-6 hours..possibly more if i turn down the brightness of the screen a little.

It seems like I read somewhere that some med schools give you(you pay for it somewhere) a laptop when you go to school there. Does anyone know schools that do/don't. I'm guessing the majority don't since so many people are weighing in on which ones are best/they own.

I think most schools just provide an allotment in your loan so that it's increased a bit first year to include a laptop, purchase is up to you. Many students at SOM have Dell but I'm not sure if it's preference or based on school discount or what.

I just heard that the University of Kansas medical school is requiring all of its incoming students to get tablet pc's. I guess they are going to try to use them through out their 4 years.

I had a 15" top of the line Dell laptop my first year of med school, and honestly the thing was a piece of crap. It was too bulky to take to class every day and the battery life barely lasted 1.5 hours.

For this year, I made the switch to Mac and it was the best decision I ever made. This little 12" iBook gets a whopping 6 hours of battery life and is super-portable. One of my favorite features is exclusive to Microsoft Office Word for Mac: the Notebook feature which allows you to take notes in a "notebook" style page and record the audio of the lecture directly into the Word file! Another big plus: no viruses or spyware! My little Mac makes all my classmates jealous when I bring it to class, and as a result, I've converted at least ten people in my class to the Mac. 👍

Apple provides a big discount to students purchasing their computers; just order online and enter your school's name or bring you school ID to the Apple store with you.

PS--for anyone attending Nova, battery life should be a big consideration since there are only a few plugs in the entire lecture halls!!!

you should read that the response was about tablet PCS. I agree with the Small monitor, but if you are using a tablet for notetaking , you want a big monitor. can you imagine writing on an 11" screen? Too small to see anything. You'll' be in class all day, anyway:

Just for the record... a lot of students have the dell inspiron 6000 here at LECOM and the consensus is that they blow.... If I had to do it again I would just throw a couple pebbles in a cereal box and wrap it in tin foil... that is about comprable to this hunk of junk... I paid the big bucks and upgraded the service plan... all that does is connect me with some guy whose name he can barely say, and all they told me to do is to "do a restore..." My advise... save your money and buy something other then Dell.... you'll be happy you did.
