large intestine

Ascending colon is on the right side of the body (your left if you're looking at a model).

Transverse colon is the part on top that goes straight across.

Descending colon is on the left side of the body (your right if you're looking at the model).

Sigmoid colon is the start of the loop that leads to the rectum.

Cecum > Ascending Colon > Transverse Colon > Descending Colon > Sigmoid Colon > Rectum > Anus/ with the Appendix hanging off the cecum I believe.

Yeah, those are the gross anatomical structures. By subdivisions, are you talking about the cecum, the rectum, the anus, and the appendix?

The AAMC list that we have to know the anatomical subdivisions and gross structure...they seem like the same thing to me.

I think what they mean by knowing gross structure is knowing things like the large intestine have haustra made by teniae coli as well as decreased surface area which leads to a loss of absorptive function.
