last 60 hours GPA calculation

If I take a class in my last 60 hours, that I previously took prior to my last 60 hours, will both grades be used in the calculation of my "last 60 hours" GPA? i.e. if I got a B- in Spanish early in college but take it again recently for an A, will these two grades be taken into account when figuring my "last 60 hours" GPA?

May I ask what a "last 60 hours" GPA is for a non-trad? I am in the process of taking all my science classes following a B.A. with no scientific coursework.

Also, is an "hour" the same as a credit? 😎

Yes, I mean credit hour. By "last 60 hours" GPA, I mean the latest, or most recent, 60 credits taken. I am also taking necessary courses after already completing a BA. I was told that one's GPA is viewed three ways: cumulatively, science-related, and as the most recent 60 credits. I am trying to figure out if a grade from my previous BA will be used in figuring the GPA of the most recent 60 credits if I retake a course during those most recent 60 credits that I already had during my BA.

I applied twice to med school after college and was solidly waitlisted.
Now I'mfinishing my second graduate degree.

I turned in my amcas in early july and I've never heard of this last 60hrs thing.

The medical schools that I know do not recalculate your GPAs

It's Undergrad Science vs Non Science then overall
Then Grad Science vs nonscience then overall

This is calculated by AMCAS for the med schools

This part of the AMCAS is what the med schools look at.

I've also just completed about 15 secondaries and some of the schools...about half, ask you to list out the classes that fulfill your pre-med classes...these vary slightly from school to school some want you to list calculus some don't etc.

And of these half you want you to list out the schools only half ask you to list your grades for these classes too.

That means only about a forth of the schools I've done asked for the premed requirement grades.


There might be one school that does this last 60 thing..but I doubt its more than that one school where you learned about it.


Worry about your overall Scienceand overall GPA

The overall Science is almost always lower and more important to bring up for people. Retake really bad classes but I wouldn't retake spanish. Retake that C- semester of OChem if you want but also consider upper level classes you can do well in like an independent research. THis helped my GPAs.

yea, any courses you take now are averaged in with your undergrad gpa to create an overall gpa and science gpa, just like PhDtoMD stated.


hey, PhDtoMD, i tried to email you privately, but I couldnt. I am in a similar situation. I finished my PhD in neuroscience last year and am now pursuing medical school. I wasnt aware AMCAS calculated a separate science and overall gpa for graduate studies. I am wondering how that works exactly. How do they differentiate between science and non-science courses taken at the graduate levels. I took many neuropsych courses during grad school. I am not sure how those courses would be categorized. Any thoughts?
