I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who have pursued medicine and then decided that it wasn't for them and made a career change. I'm curious to hear any stories if people are willing to share - Why did you switch out of medicine? When? Are you satisfied with what you're doing now? And finally, any regrets?

I don't think most people switch because it isn't so easy to walk away from medicine if you have six figure debt from med school. But read some of the posts by melanoleuca and trismegistus4. That will probably give you most of the cons of medical school and medicine you are looking for.

I know of a few... physician turned HS chemistry teacher, surgeon turned author (but then again, surgeons sometimes retire at a relatively young age), total switch from patient care to research or management, or pharmaceutical/device manufacturer consultant, or professional organization administrator.

If you graduate at the usual age and have finished paying off your loans by 50 (if not sooner), you can do what you want with nothing hanging over your head. I think that sometimes people find talents and interests that develop over time and they make the most of opportunities that present themselves.
