I am currently a 4th year DO student with a USMLE in the 220's. I have interest in going the OB/GYN route but have a lingering question about whether or not I would enjoy anesthesiology. I have not scheduled any anesthesiology elective rotations as of yet, which I am starting to second guess. My question is, it being this late in scheduling I am fairly certain I can get a rotation at a smaller institution close to home. Beyond the obvious reasons such as getting your face known, learning about the program, etc. is it an absolute necessity or very helpful to rotate at an institution that has a residency program? I.E. do programs look to see that you have experience in a anesthesiology residency situation?

I feel that being known at your home institution would be a much greater asset when applying than an arbitrary away rotation at a community hospital.

If you have a required critical care month this year/fall, I would seek out which CC sites have staff anesthesiologists as this would provide an opportunity for a lot of time with staff along with a shot for a letter.
