Just wondering how much of an impact late applications has on an applicant. Has anyone (or anyone you have heard of) submitted a late application, had a poor cycle, but re-applied the following cycle at an earlier date with no significant changes and do significantly better? And I am mainly asking about people who "should not have problems getting in," or those with solid GPAs, MCAT scores, and all the "necessary" ECs.

It's not possible to quantify exactly how big of an impact applying early/late can have on an application. The applicant pool can change drastically from year to year, so even if you were able to find someone that fit those specifications, he/she could have been more successful after reapplying simply due to changing applicant dynamics. What IS known is that applying early can only help you. If given the choice, apply as early as possible.
