Ok, for those of you who read my previous post a week or so back, I was contemplating a late change to OB/gyn from anesthesia. I FINALLY got a chance to meet with the OB/gyn faculty today and... I'm going to do it! I meet with my dean tomorrow, I'm freaked out as hell, but I feel like this is really the right decision.

So, now I have to come up with a list of places to apply, which is pretty tricky since about half of them have deadlines of 11/1 or earlier (although my PD and my dean (informally) have said they will go to bat for me to try and get a late app considered at a few of these places).

So, any recs on programs? Is it best to have a good mix of community and academic (this is very different than in anesthesia, where you don't really have any community)? Ideally I'd like to stay in the south or midwest, and would consider the northeast as well (I know its more competitive by my fiance is finishing a PhD up there).

Anyways, any advice would be sooo appreciated right now since I'm about to completely freak out. Thank you!

YEAH LILLY GOOD FOR YOU!!!! HIP HIP HORRAAYY HIP HIP HOORAYY!! GOOD LUCK HON! :luck: :luck:

You could try the UMDNJ schools in New Jersey - they are very tough (hours wise) but turn out some great obgyns that stay on as faculty or get fellowships with the program in gyn/onc and umm, i cant remember the other specialty but I know there are two!

I wish you all the best my prayers will be with you 🙂

Lilycat!

I'm soooo happy things are working out for you. We will be happy to have you in the profession. You and I can talk some more b/c as I remember we both want families AND careers in OBGYN. My husband and I are actually trying right now. I'd like 3 - 4 kids. Anyway, good luck with the process and feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the process!!!!!

Congrats!

Thanks for the support guys! I'm curious -- what is the best way to research programs, esp. community programs? Anything you found helpful besides Scutwork? So much to catch up on in so little time!

I used mostly Frieda and APGO websites. I didnt really like scutwork...didnt get many objective reviews of programs. It was either disgruntled medical students who hated programs and bashed them or residents who felt their programs were Shangri-La. As far as community programs...talk to residents at your program. I also found other people on this message board helpful at giving good honest opinions about different programs both community and academic. Just ask around. Any particular programs you are interested in? I would be glad to give you my input if I am familiar with them.

Good luck...congrats on making the transition. 🙂

what part of the country are you looking at?

Mostly south/southeast (Texas, Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee, Carolinas), and the northeast (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island).

So far my list is: Baylor (Houston), Scott & White, UTSW, UT-Austin, UAB, Dartmouth, UMass, Brown, and then petitioning (with the help of my PD) for possible review of a late app. at Vanderbilt, Emory, and UT-Houston (A or B).

I haven't found anything on this board about the UAB or Emory programs, so if anyone has info on those two, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks again to everyone for their help and support -- it is sooo appreciated! Good luck with interviews and the match!

I've got a friend who is in the Med/Peds program at UAB who said her contacts with the residents in the Ob/Gyn program were pleasant. Said the residents seemed nice, happy, and well adjusted. Her impression was that it is not a malignant program.
A classmate of mine went to Emory for undergrad and can't stop telling everyone to go there, but I don't have any specifics. Says "it's fabulous!" 🙂
Good luck to you!
