Late decision... need some advice

Your gpa is fine. Also check what your science gpa is. Don't believe you'll get ruled out as your cumulative gpa is above average for many schools. Go look at http://predents.com/

Since you're on semester system, you'll finish around may, right? You could either try to study for it during the semester or study hardcore after finishing school. It's tricky to try to study and get your app together at the same time, though. Consider starting on your app earlier and working on your personal statement if you intend on studying after the semester ends.

On top of shadowing, make sure you get your letters of rec ready. You can submit your app before the LoRs are turned in, but schools will wait for them to come in before they review your app.

If you can do those things, you'll be good for this cycle.

Alright, thanks for the info. If you could provide a rough estimate, how many hours of volunteering/shadowing should I be aiming for?

your GPA is fine. However, you'll have to work for the DAT. Seeing that you are only taking four classes (I'm assuming that Molecular Cell and Socio wouldn't be too hard), you can use one day of the week for shadowing, and another (or the weekend for volunteering) so you have the other five to study/party or more importantly brush through the DAT book. By mid semester, when you've done enough shadowing and volunteering, take a DAT kaplan course if you think you need one, OR start studying on your own. Keep in mind that if you want to retake the DAT, you have to wait a 3-month period. Good luck! you can do it, all you need is time management.

p.s. a research paper would look awesome!

i was in the same position as you this past may, graduated and didnt have much to my name.

graduated may. studied for dat on my own with textbooks, review books, practice tests, and software. took DAT July 28th. I lined up and did all of my "100 hours" of shadowing over the next two weeks. First week of august completed my application including shadowing projections - which i did actually meet 🙂.

While studying you will be bored enough to fill out the actual application, get your transcripts sent (as early as possible after june 1st) and have your LORs in, and choose your schools!!! review the school requirements as some take anatomy. make sure you read the forums to see which DAT material is the best.

speaking of LORs. some schools require one from a dentist. throughout my shadowing, i found one really cool dentist and had him write me one which then was submitted a bit later to the 2 or 3 schools who required it.

check out topscore and crackdatpat right now also. i think they are good for 6 months, and if so, i would recommend purchasing it during this semester and take a few practice tests (of which you can forget, and retake during the summer). crackdatpat will allow you to familiarize yourself with some weird logic type games. then when the summer comes, youll know what to expect and you need to do.

register for the DAT ~2 months in advance.

are you familiar with how the application cylce works?

I am not terribly familiar with the application cycle, but I'm guessing there might be a sticky that I haven't read yet containing most of the information I need.

Additionally, for the ~30-100 hours of shadowing requirement, does volunteering at free community dental clinics factor into that number? I am assuming not, but just want to double check.

Yes it does count! I also spent time at a dental lab which a practice i shadowed sent out their lab work to. I think the wider grasp you have of dentistry as a whole looks better
