I understand that late invites well after those posted on SDN are likely due to cancelled interviews from first round candidates. My question is whether these late invites suggest the applicant is on the lower end of the rank order list; or, optimistically, does it mean once you get an interview it's really about how well you fit. Thanks!

I wouldn't count on too many of those (although I wish I get some). I think if you get any invites it's all about how well you interview and fit in, regardless when you get the invitations.

It's too easy to drive yourself crazy trying to figure out the application process. My guess would be that yes, late invites typically mean a program didn't get enough acceptances from their original interview offers and they had to send out a second batch. But all you can do is present yourself as enthusiastically and honestly as you can and let the chips fall where they may. I would focus more on wowing them at the interview rather than trying to figure out where you rank among the other applicants.
