Here's a weird one. Got an interview offer on December 28th at somewhere that I was relatively interested in...lets say in my original top 3. Relatively competitive, not a huge name or anything though. I wrote to them earlier, asking about an interview and was told that they had offered all their interview spots and were saving spots only for 'special cases.' And now this.

Now my mom always told me that I was 'special' and I would like to continue to believe this (jk.) However, does 'special' translate as 'We have had some cancellations and could fit you in now' and is it worth going...at this late date? Are they likely to be interested? Also, I would have to cancel another interview in order to fit this in...one that was offered to me almost immediately, but one that I was not as interested in. Any opinions or experience with this?

They wouldn't ask you for an interview if they weren't considering ranking you, so if you like the place then go. It may mean people turned them down or cancelled, or it may mean that they decided they just want to interview more, or it may mean whoever you talked to earlier was full of ****.

I agree with Yaah. Worth going, if you want to go there. Besides they may do their rank list right once right at the end of the interview season, which gives you a plus in that they are more likely to remember you...

Well it is a plus if they remember positive things, but if they remember something bad.. :scared:
Ha, just kidding.

I wouldn't worry about why they offered you an interview, just go if you are interested in the program.

Thanks fellas. Makes me feel better, and yeah, that is actually a bonus that they might remember me...if things go well that is!

i agree with the above posters that if you're more interested in the place that offered you the late interview than you are in the other place, then you ought to go check it out. i had something similar happen to me with my med school interviews - i ended up liking the place (although i didn't get in). this is arguably more important than what med school you get into, as over the next 4 years you'll be learning the job you're going to do for the next 30 years. if i were in your shoes, i'd definately go, even if it meant i had to lose a hundreds of dollars because of the travel expenses. best of luck to ya.

Yeah, I'd say definitely go - they wouldn't invite you if they wouldn't want you at their program - it might end up being a great program. I was invited a bit late to one place (interviewed on one of their very last days) and ended up loving the place & ranking it high.
