I applied late in November (August MCAT). Now I am starting to get few interviews. Now before I raise my hope too much. I would like to undetstand from you if most likely these are for backup and waitlist kind of interviews? or they are really for real open seats?

I am not saying I would not go for interview but would like to understand and get my expecations in line.

Thanks

if you do searches on this topic...you will see that although it may seem relatively late in the process, you can still get outright acceptances. though schools have to fill their classes by midmarch that doesnt mean you are out of spots. there will always be waitlist movement and chances for acceptance off the waitlist as well.

for non rolling schools if you get in and interview before they make their decisions then you are fine.

for rolling schools, there will prolly less spaces available but still chance for outright acceptance will exist.

good luck.

Both.
Please understand that schools admit a lot more people than there are spots. So even if your interview is late and by that time the school admitted enough people to fill their class, it doesn't mean that they are interviewing you for the waitlist. Many schools admit double or triple the number of spots.
That being said however, it is obviously better to be interviewed earlier than later. Schools make their decisions in batches, and it is better to be considered as part of an earlier batch -- when there are plenty of places to give out.
Good luck.
