Hi every one.

I was wondering how bad it affects my internship and residency if I go ODS after graduation? I think I don't have enough time in between graduation and internship and I will definitely miss at least 2 or more months. I can't also go before graduation because I don't have enough time.

Thank you

I've answered this before in other threads but I'll answer it once more.

Unless you have a straight-through contract, being late for internship is a bad idea. Its worst if you are in a specialty that takes people straight-through with a PGY2 app (ie IM, GS, OB).

You will be behind the other interns for months. The learning curve is steep and the headstart will leave you appearing slower and less efficient. You will make it harder to generate a schedule. This can affect your intern evals. Internship performance is important for PGY2+ selection.

Frankly, the fact that you no longer have time to go is a bad choice that you made over the past several years. You better let your program know ASAP. They will not be happy about it. You'll get lumped in with the people who failed rotations or USMLE steps (thats who shows up late and everyone knows it).

Does your school schedule in any months for off/interview time during 4th year? My school allots 3 months for this, so I am able to fit it in prior to graduation since I don't have to go on dozens of interviews around the country. Consider talking to your school about this and see if there is anything they can do. The worst they can do is say no, but you don't know unless you ask. It's worth a shot.

The reason I can't go before graduation is because I have already used my active duty time for this year. So, can you suggest or recommend any other option. Thank you

I'm in a similar boat, I failed a class during my first year which prevented me from being able to go to OBLC during the summer between 1st and 2nd year and now I only have one solid month of vacation left before graduation to use so that I can go to OBLC my problem is that if I go to OBLC during 4th year my graduation will be delayed by about a month and I'm assuming residency starts on 6/15 for the army (or close to it) so I'd be late for residency to start by about two weeks

So what would be better for me to do delay graduation but graduate with having gone to OBLC or delay OBLC and complete OBLC after graduation

thanks

So what about the people who are in the HSCP program? Are they screwed? In that program you are not comissioned until after you graduate and you can't attend ODS until you are comissioned. So are you left with GMO just because you sigend up for HSCP? If so that truely sucks and the Navy needs to be up front about this.

I'm not positive, but I think internship may start close to 6/6 this year. Try to work with your school regarding OBLC. My school was pretty understanding, and I doubled up on "easier" electives this year so I could attend ODS before graduation. Maybe you could do a research elective with a random elective so you could combine your vacation month with the extra time you would have saved and attend ODS. Ideally, officer training is a "required" part of your scholarship so maybe you could somehow swing it with your school. Good luck!

Sorry, must do ODS prior to start of active duty.

I'm in a similar boat. It is much better to graduate. No graduation = no licence. No licence = waiting on navy, state, and your medical school for your licence to be processed. Waiting = unable to start internship for a LONG time.

I was advised that is much preferred to wait to start internship due to ODS then to wait on your licence as you will be able to start much quicker.

This makes no sense to me. You can't get a license until you finish internship or PGY2 depending on the state. You can't finish internship until you start internship. Any delay is the same.

It is a provisional license. In order to practice medicine in a training capacity (as an intern) it is a requirement that you hold a diploma. No US school of medicine will issue a diploma until all required course work is complete.

Dude, you don't have a clue what your talking about. Of course you have to graduate before you go to internship but if you have to do ODS, late is late. And you aren't licensed until after internship. Training licenses are not used in the .mil. You need an unrestricted license after internship.

Whatever...either way you'll be late and someone will be pissed.

Since I and other friends will be late becouse of ODS, is there anything we can do to minimize the consequence of late starting? Thank you.

Work hard when you show up, don't make a spectacle of yourself when you do show, hopefully have rotated at the hospital before, etc.

Unfortunately many of the things that will put you at a disadvantage are simply things you can't make up or prepare for. If you know the hospital, computer system, etc that will help some. It simply takes a few months of internship to "get the hang of things" and when people show up late they are then a month or whatever behind the power curve. When all your peers are hitting their stride you are a month behind and when attendings compare they aren't thinking about "oh he was a month late and I should consider that"

It also makes it tough if you don't have a straight through contract for your specialty (if you do, then the whole late thing is pretty much a no biggie) because the program is likely making decisions about you in the October timeframe before the board meets in November.
