I am planning on taking Step 2CK in time to have it available by my interviews. Since Step2CS dates aren't available for that time, I was planning to postpone it to early February..is that too late? I know that some programs want 'step 2' before they rank you, but does that include CS?

Any advice?

The advice we've received is to make sure you take it in time to get scores back before rank day and ideally early enough to retake it if need be. The whole point of having Step 2 grades in hand is to remove that slim chance that the residency will have to deal with a last minute failure by one of the incoming interns.

On a related topic, the downside to the above advice is you'll have several months to await Step 2 CS results and neurotically worry about somehow slipping into the few percent that fail. Assuming a prompt re-take and pass, anyone care to comment on whether it would significantly hurt an application?

I'd bird dog test dates until something opened up to get that stupid test/money suck out of the way.

I am not sure what the score or lack thereof will mean to your application, but keep in mind that it takes several months to get your score back and statistically, a small number of people will fail in order to justify the need for this stupid test and thus allow the NBME to make a ton of money on it.

I know that some programs require step2 CK prior to ranking you, but nobody requires CS grades, right?

I will take it before the rank, but won't have my score by then...will that cause a problem?

I took my Step 2cs in early February and didn't get my score back until well after march day. It didn't seem to affect any ranking as there were a few of us who took it that day and we all matched at one of our top choices. That being said, it would be awful to match somewhere and not have enough time to retake the test in the small chance you didn't pass.

Step1 good, rocked step2. Why do they even have it as a requirement if you can't get it done earlier?? Why can't they open more dates since now they are now being viewed as a requirement to match? 👎

lol this sucks. I literally need two more paychecks to pay for this stupid test. No way in hell im taking out one of them silly 6.8% rolling interest loans. They would have to break my knees in advance before I do that.
