plzz explain the functions of Superior n Inferior heads of the lateral pteygoid muscle ???

Hi!

I quoted "On mandibular opening, the inferior head contracts and the superior head maintains resting activity. On closure of the mandible, the superior head contracts while the inferior is at rest."

Hope it can help you.

Superior:

Bilateral - protracts the mandible.
Unilateral - rotates mandible to contralateral side.
Additional note - controls movement of condyle during closing.

It is not considered a muscle of elevation (closing) despite that last action.

Inferior:

Bilateral - protracts the mandible, pulls condyle inferiorly, depresses mandible.
Unilateral - rotates mandible to contralateral side.

thanx guys
but if q asked which head is responsible for protraction n depress the mandible??
its the Inferior head of lateral pterygoid muscle.... is this rite...

Yes you are correct, according to Streetwolf, who answered your question exactly in the previous post.

Hi!

I preferred the superior head because it inserts both into the condyle and into the disc, it is felt to function by making rapid adjustments in the relative positioning of the disc and condyle during closure.

Actually the function of (L ptry muscle ) is as the following :

1)With ASSISTANT : (omohoyoid &Anti belly diges ) >>>OPENING THE JAW

2)WITHOUT ASSISTANT : >>>PROTRUSION Movement .

Correct me if I am wrong

thanks 👍

Hey the lateral pterygoid, coz of its location has always been difficult to study.Nevertheless am quoting an excellent piece of information. hope it helps, pls lemme know if am wrong or there are any loopholes.

"Two distinct functional patterns were identified from the region of the lateral pterygoid muscle. The inferior head acted synergistically with the suprahyoid muscle group in opening movements of the mandible. No activity was noted in closing movements, or in swallowing. In contrast, the superior head was not active during opening movements. Electromyographic activity of the superior head, antagonistic to the suprahyoid muscles, was observed during such closing movements as chewing and clenching of the teeth and during deglutition. The superior head presumably positioned or stabilized the condylar head and disc against the articular eminence during closing movements of the mandible, while the inferior head assisted in the translation of the condylar head downward, anteriorly, and contralaterally during opening movements. Thus, the two heads of the lateral pterygoid can be considered as two functionally distinct muscles."

Hi Black Rose,
superior head of lt ptr has no fuction in movements of mandible perse, although both the heads work synergistically .

Hi!

Thank you very much for your help.
