Hello my fellow future dentists,

I was wondering if the law of segregation pertains to anaphase 1 or 2? I was thinking it was 2 because it is about

generating haploid cells with splitting up the sister chromatids

but on Feralis note it says anaphase 1 so I wanted to confirm it

Thank you!

I am also confused about law of independent assortment. Some sources say law of segregation and independent assortment both occur during Anaphase I while some say law of independent assortment occurs during Metaphase I. Can some shed some light on this. Thanks.

This is correct. Law of Independent assortment is seen in Meiosis -1. This is where chromosomes separate after homologous recombination. In Meiosis -2 there is no recombination, just the separation of chromatids

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your reply! Greatly benefiting from your 2016 Math and DAT destroyers!!
So Law of independent assortment is meosis 1 where as the law of segregation is meiosis 2. right?

Forgive me for annoying you with same question over and over... But I just wanted to make sure because I do not want it to show up on my exam and regret not asking for a clarification. So you answered to my question that independent assortment is meiosis 1 and segregation is meiosis 2. However, you answered to rak173 that both happen during anaphase I... Can you clarify this? I sincerely apologize this incovenience. English isnt my first language so I think I am having more difficult time here 🙁

Always happy to help, all questions are important and will help other students too.

Anaphase 1 is in Meiosis 1. That is where homologous chromosomes move apart.
