Has anyone interviewed at LECOM and expressed interest in their new Florida campus? I'm wondering whether interest in the new branch (and a total lack of interest in the Erie,Pa campus) is frowned upon.

Are spots being filled for the Florida campus for fall 2004, or not quite yet. The wording on the website was a bit ambiguous.

Thanks for any and all other input.

I really don't think they would frown upon you showing interest in the Florida site. In fact, I think they might like it. I feel that some people may be hesitant to go to the new campus since it is a new adventure for the school. They have 150 spots to fill, all PBL, and so I think they'll have to bust their butts to fill those spots the first few years until adjustments have been made. Anyway, there's nothing wrong with wanting to go to the other campus--especially if you can think up of some other reasons to go there besides the weather (what, you don't like snow in october?). Good luck in your application process.

LECOM Admissions has been relectant to talk about Florida. Applicants can send an email or write a letter expressing interest and they'll put it in their file. LECOM is reluctant to move forward until accrediation/approval? by the end of October.

With the # of applicants declining for several years, until maybe this year, it must be a scary thought for LECOM and Touro trying to fill seats at new schools. PCOM may have less trouble in GA b/c of its larger applicant base.

From the LECOM website:

"On October 4, 2003, the American Osteopathic Association Bureau of Professional Education approved branch campus status for the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine facility in Lakewood Ranch Florida. The Bureau will send an inspection team to Florida in November to review the plans for the new branch campus. Approval by the Bureau allows LECOM to begin accepting applications from students considering enrollment at the Florida Campus in September 2004. Students should apply to LECOM through AACOMAS."

I don't see why they would frown. Everyday my class hears something about the Florida campus. LECOM wants to fill the campus up and I doubt they will have any trouble. There are 230 people in my class...I'm sure they will find some people eager to bask in the Florida sun.

Coming directly from the head of student affairs...
The reason why LECOM was hesitant to give too much info re applications to the Florida campus is that the AOA strongly frowns upon ANY "advertising" until they give the go ahead for accepting students. They don't like any recruiting, or even acceptance of applications prior to this point.
Since LECOM is now accepting applications for "FLECOM" they must have recieved the final word fron the AOA. I don't think they were trying to hide anything or be sketchy, they were just following the rules.

Muchas Gracias.

"Approval by the Bureau allows LECOM to begin accepting applications from students considering enrollment at the Florida Campus in September 2004."

This is the exact sentence that caused me confusion.

Is it: "...begin accepting applications from students considering September 2004 enrollment..."

Or: "...allows LECOM to begin accepting applications... in September 2004.

KnowutImean?

If the former of the two is really what's going on here, I think that's great news since the applicant pool is likely to be CONSIDERABLY smaller. (consisting primarily of those applying to LECOM, of which only a fraction would be interested in the FL campus, or SDN members, whose networking capacity far exceeds that of mere mortals 😀)

What would be some of the advantages/drawbacks of going to a brand new school? (I think I'll start a new thread. Edward Via Virginia COM students could probably really help)

On one hand, there will inevitably be some kinks to iron out, which may be a significant detriment to one's education.

However, as is the case with my current (brand new) o.chem teacher, the grading scale tends to be verrry generous, while not hurting your education too much. (my midterm grade is a 91% with a class average 68%) friggin sweet.

Thanks for all input!

They are taking apps for students who wish to be in the class of 2008 at the Florida campus. So you'll be starting school in Sept. of 2004.

I've heard a few things about the Florida campus...only one thing disturbed me. If you're desperate to know, PM me.

Scary, yeah..... The crack you smoke must be REAL GOOD stuff!!!

What's LECOM's reasoning for openning a branch campus in Florida?

If it were in the northwest where there is a lack of DOs, I would understand. Or maybe Alaska, or Alabama/Mississippi. But Florida!?!

I want to believe there is a good logical reasoning for openning a branch in Florida (besides the obvious cash flow that will be generated). Maybe I'm being too cynical.

Note: Part of my skepticism is due to the fact that LECOM is a new school. I'm pretty sure that if the school has been around awhile (20+ years), I wouldn't be as skeptical.

It's quite obvious that Drs. Silvia and Jon Ferretti(our supreme overlords) want to rule the medical world.

Silly question outsider!

You are probably right!

But I have also heard that a few of the professors wanted to move the PBL down to Florida for their own personal reasons.

LECOM also has a few affiliated hospitals in Florida, so that may also be a reason.

But I agree that the main reason probably is so Ferretti-land can expand further. 😉

Any of you that are worried about going to LECOM's Florida campus let me tell you....don't. The person who has been selected to head up the pre-clinical curriculum is probably one of the most respected medical school professor's in the US (both allo and osteo). He's been doing this for a long, long time. I'm an MSI now in the LDP pathway and if I had my way I would go to PBP and straight to Florida with him.

Thanks for the great input guys.

Does anyone have an opinion on how competitive it will be to get in to FLECOM this year, given that they haven't been allowed to "advertise" for it, and the applicant pool would be somewhat small?
