For those of you who don't know, the Leadership Alliance is a consortium of about 30 schools that provide summer research opportunities. Basically, I wanted this thread to be similar to the SMDEP thread, so that people would have a place to ask questions about specific Leadership Alliance research sites, applying, or just meeting people before the summer programs begin. To start things off, I was just wondering if people would post the Leadership Alliance sites they have applied to and whether they have been accepted or rejected from any sites? Also, if anyone has previously participated in a Leadership Alliance summer internship, it would be nice to hear about your experience as well.

i think i almost applied to this.. i filled out all the prelim stuff.. but i realized i wasnt going to meet the deadlines due to lors.. or something like that

however, some of the programs i eventually applied to were listed on the site.

Hey people....all the other sites are listed here: http://www.theleadershipalliance.or...Q_PageID_E_38_A_PageName_E_InstitutionDetails. Many of the research programs take place at premiere research institutions, so I would expect these programs to be as popular as SMDEP. Basically, if you applied to any of these programs either independently or via the leadership alliance application service then it would be nice to hear about your questions, experiences at particular research sites, insider info, etc. This is really just meant to be an informative/networking thread for any individuals that have applied/been accepted at any of the research sites. So post away....

Oh yeah, redlight, did you actually end up doing research at any of the particular sites. If you don't mind sharing, which one and what was your experience like?

no i applied this year.

There have been 60 views and only redlight has posted. While I certainly enjoy talking to redlight, I would like to hear from others as well. If you're worried about anonymity or something just create a different name (like I did, lol), but please post if you know anything. Anyway, I have a question, so for one of my research sites a google search revealed that someone received an acceptance on Feb. 23. Does anyone know if there seems to be a general trend of sending out acceptances earlier and rejections later? Also, which programs did you apply to redlight?

which of the programs i applied to are listed in the leadership alliance? ...duke and chicago.

im on the fence as to where else i should apply.. i'm temped to apply to other regions like west coast.. or more southern places like texas

and you?

Note: The SR-EIP is not designed for students pursuing professional training for careers in the practice of law, business administration, clinical medicine, clinical psychology or the allied health professions.

Should premeds still apply ? I meant, those who don't want to pursue MD/PhD

im not too familiar w/ the website, but if you fool around you get to a page with a list of the individual sites and some contact information and descriptions.. some schools are looking for specific things like... must have taken X courses, must be in this year/grade/etc, must be interested in this field or w/e. some sites really really only want pre md-phds. some welcome reg premeds to apply. some require prior research experience.. some specifically require prior summer research program experience.. etc.

some of these are geared towards premeds specificallly so just be careful in choosing sites. (i believe you can only pick 3.. and you rank them so if you get into your top choice i guess you are DQ'd from the rest even if you change your mind..?)

yo redlight, i applied to mostly leadership alliance sites. I applied to a couple of the big name research institutions. I also applied to some other non leadership alliance sites as well. Hopefully, someone accepts me. I'm also think about applying to a site out west as well....maybe UCSD or Stanford, but i'll probably wait until I hear back from these sites first.

tennisball08, i think it's fine to apply to the leadership alliance if you're not interested in an md/phd or phd. however, if you plan on applying in the future then i think it's definitely necessary to have an interest in academic medicine, meaning that you will integrate clinical, basic science, or public health research into your future career as a physician. also, most of what redlight said is correct except for the fact that it is possible for you to be accepted at all three research sites that you selected. on the flip side, you can also be rejected from all three research sites. if that happens, your application will be reviewed at leadership alliance headquarters and they'll determine whether or not to forward your application to additional sites....or whether to terminate your application.....😱

lol thats a nice list you've got there. i was going to also apply to penn, hopkins and yale but my LORs took forever. i actually finished the hopkins and yale application...[sigh]

so, then what's the point of ranking the sites? i thought it was kind of a match-like process where if you get into your top choice you couldnt pick the other 2..?

what you're saying does make alot of sense and I honestly have no idea why they want participants to rank their sites in order of preference. however, my application status page suggests acceptances to multiple sites are possible. below, I copied and pasted the information from my page....

Summer program coordinators will send offers of placement directly to an applicant's Primary Email. Offers of placement are being made now and will continue to be made through the month of March.

You may receive more than one offer. However, once you accept an offer, no further offers will be extended.

We encourage you to wait until you have received all of your SR-EIP offers before making a final decision, and to spend sufficient time exploring the merits of each offer.

You must confirm your participation in the Leadership Alliance by accepting an offer on this page. March 21: Deadline for accepting offers in the Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. April 1: Deadline for accepting offers in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Your final Placement Status for the three institutions will be posted here by mid-April. Under the Placement Status column, each institution will indicate either "Offer Made" or "Closed with No Offer". You will see the independent decision of each institution and the date the decision was made.

Just to break the: Red Light > Alan G> Red Light > Alan G> Red Light > Alan G> ....
.....
sequence..

Alright, i will right something else as well:
The ranking is so that u have an option. If one site offers you to do research in pharmcology and you hate it for some reason (which u should not as an undergrad), you have another option. They ask u what u r intersted in the app but what dept u r placed in seems pretty random.

I actually made a post concerning this program earlier I do not believe I made a thread however. It would have been great to make this thread before the deadline of the application due to the fact most people have questions concerning the application process more so than the inner workings of the program.I myself I applied to Tufts, NYU and Brown. I am actually already invovled in research at my current university and I am not sure if I want to venture away from my projects another summer (pervious summer I did SMDEP). Many of my friends who did SMDEP are applying to this program most of them at places like Hopkins,Harvard and Yale...We will not know the decisions of the site untill March 1st... So perhaps at that time we can come back and speak on this program, because I do not have much to say now about it now.

Thanks for the clarification NeuroChaos. I'm glad someone else besides redlight actually posted (not that I don't like redlight...😀 lol). Are you a previous participant by any chance?

Also, you're probably right Techmed07. I would have made a thread about the program earlier, but I didn't find out about the leadership alliance until fairly late in the process (although I knew about some of the programs at individual sites). Hopefully, this thread will at least help to publicize the program a little more for future applicants because it definitely makes the process of applying to summer research programs much easier. Yeah, I definitely feel you on the whole summer dilemma thing. I'm also involved in research at my university, so I'm not sure if it would be better to stay at my school for the summer and work on a project or venture elsewhere. hahah...this whole process is like a min-medical school application process. I'm so anxious for my decision!

lol..fine i'll post less.. and just be a :ninja:

hahahahah....nice smiley lol. no, i wasn't saying you should post less, but rather others should post more, so keep doing your thing.

does anyone know if any of the leadership alliance sites send out information about acceptances early? I'm just worried because I remember that when I was reading up on some of the places that I applied to, one of the participants had a blog and on Feb.23 stated they were accepted at one of the leadership alliance sites, so I'm worried about whether I've been accepted or not.

First acceptance Tufts University (02/28/09), It seems like a pretty good program I am waiting on NYU and Brown. Tufts was my second choice. The first round acceptances should have gone out tommorow (3-1-09). Nonetheless perhaps the first wave of acceptances have gone out a day early. Please do not worry I am sure everything will work out.

I guess my hypothesis was right. I have a feeling that acceptances are sent out early probably like 1 week to a couple days early. *sigh* i have a feeling it's going to be all or mostly rejections. oh well, such is life. you can't always get what you want. i'll just have to work that much harder then. anyway, techmed07 was your acceptance sent to you via e-mail or on the website? oh yeah, congratulations by the way and i hope you hear some more good news too!! i keep checking frantically and don't see anything, so things aren't looking good for me at this point, but i'll let you guys know if i get accepted anywhere.

Come on man, you do not know that. Besides I am sure that as people decline certain sites more doors will open up. My acceptance was sent via email. I am sure everything will work out, do not worry.👍

Ok I am pretty sure I got rejected from NYU due to the fact that they do not cater to the research area I want to be involved in....

techmed07, assuming that you applied to do basic science research, i don't think that a site will reject you simply because they do not specifically cater to your area of research. as long as they offer research in an area relevant to your research interest and they like your application, i think they would probably be willing to accept you. anyway, got my first rejection today (any guesses where?)....woohoo, lol (well, i at least heard something right?). anyway, they totally closed my file, so even if more spots open up...i won't be getting one.... haven't heard from anywhere else, so i'm predicting more rejections and maybe a waitlist? on the bright side, makes deciding where to spend my summer a bit easier. hahah...thanks for the encouragement though techmed07...definitely appreciate it.

hi, im new here and i stumbled upon this forum because i've been dying to know why i haven't seen anything new on the status box. so you guys got an email for an acceptance? what did your status box say when you did not get any offers? ive been checking my status every 15 minutes and its getting irritating.

i applied to yale, university of colorado and columbia. I got accepted into CPIMA SURE and they have sent me to IBM Almaden Lab near San Jose. I'm having second thoughts because the program isn't my first choice.

What does anyone think? Please respond. 🙂

I am sorry man. What site was it? Yeah my friend was recently was invited to the Hopkins site but has not heard for any other sites as of yet. Perhaps, rejections are on the way for both of us concerning the other sites we applied to oh well. I hope that the other two sites come through for you!:xf:

AlanG remember if you do not get accepted to any of the sites. The main office will pull your application and send it other sites. All the sites that leadership alliance partners with are very good. You will be going somewhere this summer👍

Leadership Alliance will send acceptances via email. The status box on the website will only show your final decision.

hahah ellayes you need to chill out. i thought i was crazy checking like every hour. congrats on cpima. i quickly perused the research site and the program seems pretty game. oh yeah, i see you applied to yale too...yeah their program seems so fun...hopefully we both hear get good news. anyway ellayes, you'll get an e-mail from the particular site about your status. also, they will update your leadership alliance status page as well (for me the update on the website came about 2 hours after my e-mail rejection). for instance, my page said "closed with no offer" when i got rejected from.... jhu, lol (congrats to your friend techmed07, although, i'm kinda jealous cuz jhu is DA BOMB!). yeah, i'm glad they agree to forward the apps to other places because it at least makes it feel like the effort to do the application was somewhat worthwhile. if i don't get in anywhere i'll just stick around and do research at my uni...so it's all good (all the places i applied to are supercompetitive/longshots for me anyway, but just thought i'd give it a try).

thanks alang and techmed07, i know i'm a little crazy for checking the site and my email every 15 minutes. however, i think you guys share the same feelings about wanting to know if you got in or not. thanks for the help and i hope you guys here more news. good luck!👍

i got my first acceptance everybody. hahhaha....yeah, someone liked me.... lolol. I didn't apply to this site via the leadership alliance application, though, but all my essays and rec letters were the same as my leadership alliance application.

the one through wharton business school/ economics??
20 hrs a week or so of research plus other things?? congrats!! now im jealous. can you tell me a bit more about the program structure?

hey redlight thanks! i think you're talking about a different program from the one i was accepted to. the program you're talking about is the penn sumr program (which does seem pretty nice, since a 20 hr. per week time commitment allows you to stil pursue alot of other activities during the summer). the program i was accepted to is the penn summer internship program, which is 10 weeks of full time biomedical research and a pretty nice stipend.

does anyone know the last possible day when someone will be informed of their decision status? my finger is starting to hurt from refreshing my e-mail and status page so much, lol. oh, and another rejection greeted me today. won't say where though, unless, i get some other leadership alliance acceptances. i kind of don't want to meet people on the first day of a summer research program and have them ask "are you AlanG from SDN?" lololol (i'm so not posting with this name after this process, cuz peeps got me all figured out...ya dig?). yeah, not cool.....🙄.

I have yet to recieve any rejections. But I am waiting for them. Since we have to make our desicion by March 21st if you have not heard back, then it is probably a rejection.

lol..ok

hey AlanG, i haven't received anything from the leadership alliance as well. it's pretty stressful because i have to tell stanford if i want to go intern with them by the 9th and i haven't heard from the other eight internships that i applied to.

however, im pretty excited for you getting into penn. 20 hr/week sounds great compared to my 40hr/week that i will have to do if i go to stanford. whats the package like for penn?

has anyone else had any other offers?

Techmed07-

Have you contacted the leadership alliance about your application or are you just waiting for responses from the school itself?

thanks.

ahem, which stanford internship?

redlight-

i was accepted to the stanford internship with the CPIMA SURE Fellowship. It's with stanford but its a network with stanford, UC-davis, UC-berkeley, IBM Almaden research center and agilent tech lab. but im still waiting to hear from other internships. im kind of hesitant to go to california since im from new york. but what do you think? should i just go for it?

thanks for the ahem comment. lol

haha congrats by the way!

im an east coaster myself! and as for your question: is sounds like a great opportunity to get great research, $$, and explore a totally new area and meet new people... sounds like a great idea to me!

however, if you want to go primarily because it is stanford, have little or no interest in the research, little or no interest in cali or norcal or palo alto or w/e, it may not be a good idea.

redlight-

thanks.

you're helping me a lot with your input. I'm really big on research, not really caring about the money but of course i like the package. I'm just waiting for other schools. I'm a semifinalist for the summer program at MIT CMSE and its really big in science research however i'm going to find out about my status after the due date for stanford. so i dont know what to do? what do you think? i really need your opinion.

thanks so much.

Techmed07-

thanks.

Yeah, I tried to contact the office but I always get the voice mail. So I have not heard back from the other sites yet.

Quick what site would you believe to be more competitive NYU or Tufts?

I think NYU would be more competitive just because of the location and the name. But when you think about it, both schools are at great locations and the name is very well known. Why do you ask? I think you got into both, correct me if wrong. Both are very good.

Which are you leaning towards?

I am mostly getting a silent rejection from NY,but who knows. I am still waiting on a word back

yeah, i think yale is giving me a silent rejection as well, given the date....oh well, lolz. does anyone know if someone can be waitlisted by a site if they apply via the leadership alliance?

Well, one of my friends got waitlisted at hopkins

hey techmed07, i haven't really heard any other news. i'm still waiting for news on the yale biostep program, but i'm guessing it's a rejection ( i'm not sure if elleayes heard anything from them yet????). all the other sites i applied to aren't leadership alliance sites and i'm still waiting on word from those sites as well.

edit: actually, maybe i wont. haha

Last edited:
hey techmed07 did your friend apply to hopkins via the leadership alliance application service? the reason i asked about whether waitlisting was possible is the fact that according to the leadership alliance site, a site can only give you the response of "offer made" or "file closed". i noticed that some of my sites were taking longer than usual to respond, so my hypothesis is that summer research programs may review applications via a hierachical round system, where a smaller percentage of applications make it to each subsequent round. i was thinking that a lack of response by this point may indicate that an individual is on some type of waitlist? otherwise, why take so long to give an official rejection?

edit: actually, maybe i wont. haha

why did you change your mind redlight? you should definitely apply and I will too if I don't get accepted this year. anybody else hear anything else because y'all have been extra quiet lately?
