Learning another language will increase wages?

I read somewhere that being proficient in another language not only makes you a more attractive candidate, but increases how much you earn. Is there any truth to that? And are there any languages in particular that are more profitable to know?

I've seen a few ads for jobs in, say, Miami or Southern California saying they prefer someone who speaks Spanish, but there's nothing about those jobs that would cause them to pay more than other jobs. Speaking Spanish doesn't magically cause money to appear out of nowhere. It's not like there are higher-reimbursing CPT codes you can use if the patient doesn't speak English.

More profitable? Maybe Russian if you live in New York. If you're in general medicine, Mandarin Chinese if you live somewhere like Vancouver. In other words, languages you can target at rich immigrant communities.
