What's a good book on optimising learning? I don't want something by some celebrity; I'm looking for something academically solid, written in a popular/consumer science style, that explains current science about learning and the key elements for storing, integrating and retrieving information. Something that talks about optimal balances of exercise, sleep, study, food, etc.
I'm going to apply to med school next year, and I want to look into fine-tuning my study skills and just increase my knowledge about how the process happens.

Until you feel the pressure, when you have to basically have 500 pages memorized by next week, there's really no way to learn to study. You learn by doing.

papers. look for academic papers.
