I picked psychiatry, but I think I'd rather do that than PMR or path. Really, I don't have any desire to do any of those specialties. The ones I like aren't on there.

so it looks like a 3 way tie between OB, Path and Psych. I thought gen peds and gen int med would be less popular.

Be fair and put gen surg up there, so the "surgery haters" and "lifestyle" folks won't have to pick OB

This one needs a re-do!

I thought about putting gen surg, but categorical surgery fills so easily and is so competitive that it is hard to really call it undesirable.

All the other specialties tend to have a lot of empty slots for FMGs/IMGs and flat out unopened positions year to year.

Personally I don't see what' so bad about OB/GYN. Larger groups seem to arrange their work schedules nicely with an attending only have to cover L&D one-two days a month. Your patients are for the most part pleasant and not chronically ill old people. How bad can it be giving a 17 year-old her first pap smear? I wouldn't mind it especially in an affluent community. I guess there is some overlap with FP in that arena, but OBs get to do a lot more.

I couldn't agree more...those who aren't comfortable in the OR or desire <50 hour work week picked the most obvious.....re-do🙂

Oh believe me, there are plenty of people who find surgery undesirable (see KentW for an opinion on this), just as I would find Peds or FM icky. I rather liked Ob-Gyn, well except for those wriggly wet things that were the result of so many OR trips (and no, its not the placenta - although they ARE wriggly and wet).

Actually, I would've done surgery before a lot of other things. Ironically, the fields I find least desirable are some of the most popular right now (the ROAD to boredom, IMO.) 😉

If by undesirable, you mean mind-numbingly boring, then anaesthesiology has to make the list. Unless you're the type who is fascinated by converting pounds to kilograms and figuring out how many cc's of _____-curonium is needed for the zillionth cholecystectomy of the day.

i agree the road ones to me are not fun, but i'm SURE there are folks out there that hate EM.

How is Proctology not listed. I don't care how much they make or what their lifestyle is. No thanks.
OB/Gyn- Obvious why its here. Who enjoys 90 degree rooms meconium and amniotic fluid splashing around. No thanks.
One of my proudest moments in medicine was knowing that after I was done with my internship I would never have to do a rectal exam or pelvic exam EVER AGAIN.

I thought you were an Ortho resident...that surprises me that you aren't doing any rectal exams. What about patients with potential spine injuries? Or does Neurosx cover all spinal injuries at your program?

Yep you are correct. Neurosurgery covered all spine. We only did adult spine on an out rotation. Anything else spine related was someone else's problem.

I agree surgery and EM shoudl both be in there. although if I hadn't fallen for EM, I would have gone into trauma surg or vascular. sucky lifestyle though.

Worst for me?
peds, IM, gas, rads, pmr, ob (gyn not so bad but since they put these together)

Surgery and EM definitely tend to polarize people.

Personally, if I hadn't done FM or IM, I'd have done EM. Surgery would've been next on the list. What can I say, I'm a generalist at heart. 😉

I thought you were dead-set on pediatric rheumatology, no question, until you found EM?

The is no such thing as a "least desired specialty". What one person finds that the least desirable, another will find the most desirable.

Peds rheum until I got to my third year and did peds and absolutely hated it. (which has only been reinforced since). By the end of my third year, if I hadn't found EM, I would have done trauma or vascular surgery. (thank god for EM.. I absolutely love it)😍 😍

That's the point. You vote what you find least desirable, and we look for a trend.

FP and IM are by faaaaaaaaaaaaar and away the worst in that list. OB-GYN is at least interesting sometimes....

everyday i see the poor little IM residents running around looking lost and trying to find heart rates on their morbidly obese diabetic monster. It must be awful.

See...to each his own...

I would rather blind myself with a hot poker than do Vascular. Matter of fact, told a physician recruiter the same when she called with a Vascular surgery job!😱

I see you went into path, where nobody even has a heartbeat. Good choice! 😉 👍

Autopsy is 1 or 2 months out of 12 months per year (until 50 in total are done)......the other 11 months is actually telling the game-show-guessing clinicians what the ACTUAL diagnosis and status of the patient is 😉

Yeah right. Pathologists use the phrase "clinical correlation suggested" almost as much as radiologists.

The least desirable specialty is the one with the most IMGs, Caribbean graduates, and allied healthcare providers in PCP jobs -- family medicine.

   i agree with u 100%

The least desirable specialty is...family medicine.

Not according to this poll. As of this writing, it's in fourth place. Frankly, I'm a little surprised myself. 😉

Of course, I've gotta agree that the top three choices are among my least favorite, as well.

🙄 Maybe it wouldn't happen if the biopsy wasn't sent down with a fantastic clinical history of "Mass" or "rash" or just "45 year old female."

You mean...internal medicine?

Not that there's anything wrong with being an IMG...but if that's how you decided on a specialty, God help you.

teehee! 😀

Yeah, I was looking for the ones I wanted to vote for, but none of them were up there! I think we need a new poll....

Sorry OBGYN... it's true... dealing with pregnant women sucks more than dealing with dead people, schizos, bipolars or children or the combination all in one. *ducks under a wall incase someone throws a flaming bottle at him*

Hey now, at least a nurse with a community college degree will never compete with me for patients.

Well it looks like the final results are in.

OB blows em all away. (kinda suprising to me as I always enjoyed the patients more than internal medicine)

Psych solidly takes second

Path gets a spot on the podium.

FP gave path a run for its money

Gen peds, gen IM, PM&R three way tie for last (or in this case best of the worst)

 This is so true. I got a shave biopsy of skin the other day that was "lesion vs. other."
