I'm doing a couple of away rotations, starting with the beginning of november to the the middle of dec. I know this is a bit late for aways, but its the only times that were available after everything was all said and done. From what I've heard, this is "peak" interview time. How bad is it to leave a program to go interview elsewhere?? I don't want to cancel my aways, because both are my top choices (and my "reach" programs) that I may not get an interview at otherwise. Any opinions?

you gotta do the interviews sometime. Just get a hold of your away rotations now, ask if they know when you will be on call, and then schedule around them. I wouldn't do more than a few during those rotations since they are your top choices, but seriously. With all the restrictions placed no one would ever get interviews done if they followed all the rules.

Although it's true that Nov/Dec are peak interview times, some places do interviews all the way through the first week of February, so there's plenty of other time if you have time off in January.

That said, it's probably not a very wise idea to take off more than 1-2 days of an audition rotation, which means you'll probably only get in 2-3 interviews before January, so pick wisely. You should also keep in mind that some programs will interview everyone who's doing a subinternship during the last week of the rotation, so make sure to not schedule other interviews during this time.

If I were you, I'd try as hard as I could to switch at least one of the away rotations. Whoever advised you to schedule sub-I's during Nov-Dec was not looking out for your best interests.

Would it be okay to leave away for one interview? Would it be viewed as inappropriate or hurt my chances in any way? How and when would you ask away rotation about leaving for an interview? thanks

i'm sorta kicking myself for scheduling my sub-I in December. so basically I have november and January to interview... I don't feel right leaving a Sub-I to interview, unless it was at that program. I guess november and January will just be very busy.

I think it would be ok to leave for one interview. When to ask... It depends. I generally don't "ask" if I need to dosomething. I "tell". So if I am going to do an interview, I would schedule now, then tell the rotation RIGHT NOW about it because you are likely already on the call schedule and they have longer to fix it. Or you can ask if they have made the call schedule yet, and you are trying to schedule ONE interview, so when would be a good time?

The problem is that your call schedule is likely more flexible than the interview schedule, that's why I recommend scheduling that first. And you likely will not be depended upon as a necessary part during your Sub-I.
