Okay, so I just looked at the LECOM residency match list that was under the FAQ section of the pre-DO forum and saw that there were only around 60 LECOM grads going into residency. I know the school accepts way more than 60 students, so why are their numbers so low? Is it because a lot of the students are doing primary care residencies through the AMA, or did they just simply not notify LECOM about their residency? This concerns me because I’m considering attending LECOM. What is their attrition rate? Here’s the link:

Thanks

This jumpedout at me right off the bat: "The following members of the Class of 2000 have agreed to be a point of contact for LECOM students and alumni."

Says to me that these are simply the ones that responded by saying that they wouldn't mind being contacted about the residency. I don't think it means anything regarding their attrition rate or anything.

I know that everyone, like 99.98% of the MS-IV class matches for a residency. And those that don't, it's basically their own fault, not LECOM's. This is what I've heard. I know the attrition rate is no higher than any other US med school. , i.e very, very low.

medical schools all have 0 attrition...almost every school has a program by which you can take an extra year if you're struggling...they will do anything to avoid tossing someone or letting someone drop out

Very true. Keep in mind it makes med. schools look terrible if someone drops out for academic difficulties. They will do almost anything to keep you from flunking out. There are no "weed out" classes in med school.

However, non-US med schools is a different story.

they told me last year it was 2-4% depending ont he class and that is normal for every medical school. People get to school and realize that medicine isn't right for them. They do other things too that might make them take an extra year. LECOM has like 250 per class now there is no way they have a 75% attrition rate if 60 people matched

Most medschools have a few people fall back to the next class for personal reasons like deaths in families, etc. Others take time off to do more research. I personally know a few in different MD schools who fell back for deaths in their families. I know when I interviewed at LECOM, they made a special note of how they never let their students fall behind and if they saw that you were, they would hunt you down and find out the reasons. That is why their attendance policy is so strict. So they can watch you closely. If you are at the bottom of the class and are not attending class, they will get on your case. I really felt like the school cared about you during the intervew. I heard of one student whose car broke down the morning of an exam and a faculty member personally drove to where the student was, picked him up, and got him to school. Then the faculty member called a mechanic.

From my impressions, there are schools out there that don't care about students. But I am pretty convinced that LECOM is not one of them. I know many students who go there and were extremely happy with their education. I have no idea about why people doubt it. I am tired of SDNers having misconceptions about schools with out even visiting the school or knowing any one there. I was pleasantly surprised by LECOM after my visit.

Indeed. Most all US med schools care about you. Carrib. schools, however, you read all kinds of horror stories about how when you fail one exam you get kicked out of the school so you don't hurt their board scores, etc.

Thanks for your, as well as everyone else’s, response. I was not knocking LECOM at all! Like I said, I'm interesting in attending the school and I just want to look at any misconceptions carefully. I know what you mean about the US med schools doing everything they can to keep the students in school. An MD that I once spoke to told me that back when he was in med school (LSU-NO) the dean actually bailed a student out of jail. It probably wasn't for anything serious though. Anyways, thanks for all your replies. You all cleared up any negative thoughts I may have had towards LECOM’s program.

The popular "they do everything they can to keep you there" isn't always true - you fail a class (and the extremely difficult remediatation exam) you retake the entire year - you fail 1 other class that year - you're out (at least that's what I hear at my school). And although they aren't meant to weed out students, there are still certain courses that weed out the majority of students who drop out (different course at each school). I know at another school I was thinking of going to, about 5% of their class is already gone 2nd semester of 1st year. So the class of 2010 who is posting here - be prepared to work VERY hard 👍 (it's really not that bad, but the numbers are real)
