For the completion of the LECOM-Bradenton application, it says you need to have the recommendation from your school's pre-professional committee, but letters from 2 science professors would be accepted if you school doesn't have one. My school does have one, but they aren't very familiar with me and the little experience I've had with them hasn't been good, effective or very productive. It'd be much better and easier for all involved for me to just get two letters of recommendation, but does anyone know if that is forbidden completely if your school has the committee?
Basically I'm wondering if you ABSOLUTELY have to use the committee if your school has one?

It's to your advantage to obtain the strongest LORs possible and if it is through your hard science professors than that is what you should use. It really is an either or situation.

Hey.. I can DEFINITELY help you with this one. My school (Penn State) has a Pre-Professional committee, but I chose not to use it. Basically, my adivisor and her staff told me over my first 3 years of undergrad that I would never get into medical school with my current extracurriculars, etc. I got even more screwed that my 2 science professors (Math and Biology) decided to leave my campus that year and move away to somewhere.. they were too busy to write my letters while they were moving. All in all, I would say find professors or faculty that know your personality and strong suits. One weak letter won't ruin your chances. I ended up asking a professor that I had only talked to a few times, and he wrote one for me. I was accepted a while back to LECOM-Bradenton. Basically, just find some good professors and good supplementary letters that can vouch for WHO you are and maybe even what you've done. Character = success, IMO.

Hope that helps..

BC did you end up sending a Math LOR to LECOM-B? I was told last year that a math LOR is considered science, but now that its in they're rejecting it. I'm supposed to be waiting on acceptance (already interviewed), and now I'm screwed because I've been out of school for a while. I'm not sure that a science prof will write me one let alone remember me....any advice?

Hrm.. that's an interesting one. I would have thought that the math would have worked. I did not end up sending the mat LoR because that professor was too busy to write me one. I ended up just asking some random professor that knew me barely. I would contact ANY professor or science faculty member that might remember you ASAP.

Good luck.

I had the same issues...been out of college over 10 years. I ended up NOT using the school's pre med crap, found 1 professor that remembered me, and used my supervisors (both MD's) for my other two. and submitted a DO LOR.....and submitted another statement stating why I did that. it's a pain in the ass but there are ways around the standard "LOR" system. just make sure the secretaries keep up with your application and extra paperwork b/c they don't expect it. things getting lost is not unheard of and that's anywhere you apply to so good luck!

Yeah. The pre-med committee seemed pretty worthless when I talked to them. I went just a few weeks ago to my advisor (who knew I didn't use her committee thing) and she straight up asked me "So what are you doing next year?" I responded with "well I got into 3 medical schools, so I'll be attending one of them." You should've seen her face. I don't think she believed me. Hilarity ensued.

BC thats awesome. My advisors didn't think I would get into medical school. I'm hoping to prove them wrong!

So far no word from any professors at my college about LOR. I'm desperately trying to get around the two science LOR's at this point. Just send me my acceptance letter already! Geez! lol.

I'm planning to call Heather and see what she says about it. I swear that they said Stats would be considered a science. It's not like it's British Lit or something!

I hope you get in! We are all gonna party like the week before orientation so that we can have one last hurrah before anatomy destructifies us ^.^
