Hey all!!!

Let's start this thread going....

My name is Rebecca...I'm in the Lecture pathway...23 now, by the time August rolls around I'll be 24.

I want to find a room mate!!! Non-smoking. I am thinking about the LakeView Apts, but who knows. I plan to head to Erie in a few weeks to look around.
 
Well, hello to my future classmates. I don't live too far away from Erie, so if anyone needs apartments, shopping etc. checked out, lemme know. I'll scout for everyone!

Who wants to be my seatmate in Lecture? I will also be 24... actually on Jan 14! So me and doctortobe will be old ladies together!!! 🙂 I was looking at Lakeview too, but they don't allow puppies 🙁 , so I couldn't bring my protection with me...

😳) I'm not 24 until April 26....

LakeView isn't the only place I'm interested in...I basically want to find a nice place and split the costs with someone. I'm quite surprsied how cheap the cost of living is in Erie!
 
I turned 24 today, so you old ladies won't be alone (LOL). I am looking for a place that will allow a cute yellow lab puppy. I will propably try to rent a house or if I can get a down payment together buy one. But, right now I am just trying to enjoy the moment. Is anyone planning on traveling any where cool before school?
 
I am also looking for a cheap apartment and splitting the cost with someone. Although I love dogs, I can't get one at this time due to all the moving around I will be doing. I hope to fly out to LECOM around Mar 22 or so to check out apartments. I graduate from undergrad in May, then plan on immeadiately moving to school. I will be HPSP student and have a Army Medical OBC from 15 June through 26 July. Thus, everything must be put in place together. Any other HPSP students out there?
 
Its so exciting to see you guys so excited! I hope you will love LECOM as much as I do...
Our white coat ceremony today was so nice. It really reminded me again of how lucky I am to have the opportunity to be doing what I really want to do. How many people can really say that? (Welcome to the club, I hope!)
Just FYI...24, 25, 26..whatever, is NOT OLD at LECOM! I am 24, will be 25 in August, and I think that the average age of our class was 26. There are some people right out of undergrad (which is a disadvantage in my opinion, but hey, who asked me?), a group who did the post-bacc last year, and then people all the way up to mid-40's..we've got PT's, NP's, PA's, teachers, research scientists, music majors...you name it! It makes for a great experience, so many people to learn from. I felt the same as you, starting out at 24 seemed "old", but in most instances I am one of the younger ones..
So enjoy these next few months, get your puppy trained, and don't let anyone scare you! Med school is what you make it..sure its hard, but where else would you rather be? I love it!

PS.. Having a dog in med school is great..especially in PBL, as you get to spend a lot of time at home studying if you wish. It gives me "someone" to talk to all day..and as long as he doesn't start talking back, things are just fine!

Class of 2007,

Next year I will be the webmaster for the SGA (student government association) website (www.lecomsga.com). If you find there's anything on it that you'd find helpful (that isn't on there already), please let me know.

I already have plans to include reviews, directions, etc. of local businesses (food stores, malls, bars, movie theaters, restaurants). Also, I plan on putting a "What I would have wanted to know" section. I'll be getting input from this year's class as to what is important (places to study, books to buy, best places to relax, how to study, etc.). Finally, there will be more links added to relavent medical websites.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds good njdo, thanks. I'll rack my brain and try to come up with a few ideas. I'll be looking forward to advice on how & where to study, especially from the ISP point of view.
 
I think that would be a great idea! I visit the SGA site every so often. It would be nice to have a section for "I wish I knew...." I've looked at NOVA's site...They have many discussions about classes, professors, styles of exams, and even dissecting secrets!

Hey guys...I just joined the site to make a post about LECOM 2007 and saw this one. Anybody live around Pittsburgh?

Hey there fellow class of 2007 students. Anyone besides myself in the independent studies pathway? Oh...for those of you moving into the area this fall one thing DO NOT move into Granada apt. unless there is no where else to go....they are the pit of all Erie. While you may save a buck moving in there in the the end you will regret it. I recommend looking for a house to share with other students or paying a little more for an apt that you will feel safe and comfortable in. Rent seems to range from $350-$700 with very nice apts going for about $600.
 
The walls in the hallways of Granada are carpeted. How bout that? Who ever thought of doing that? Actually, my friend lives there right now, and the inside of his apartment isn't too bad. Its older, and you have to pay extra for appliances that aren't olive green, but if you aren't too picky it may be okay. He seems to like it. I have heard opinions both ways, though, so I don't know if its worth the risk. It is really cheap, so if you want to take out less loan money and don't mind carpeted walls, I say go for it. Personally, I am in Tanglewood, and for 600/month including everything, I have two bedrooms and everything is brand new. I like it and it seems like a good deal to me.
I would say come to Erie and look around, and decide whats right for you...
 
It is nice to see so many people looking ahead. Last year one could hardly find a first year LECOMer on here. The places that have been talked about are all pretty close to the school which is nice in the winter but the roads are usually in good shape so its not necessary if a cheaper place can be found closer to downtown or just outside of town. There are couple of other colleges around here also so it shouldn't be too hard finding a roommate.
 
Yes, Non-Trad, I agree! All I wanted to do last year was talk to someone about PBL, and it seemed likeit was impossible! This year, accepted students are invited to sit in on our group meetings. Its really nice to see improvements. Although I will say that even though we didn't post much last year, we did a pretty good job of pulling together as a class once we started in August!
 
I live in Granada now and I have not had any bad experiences. I pay my rent if full at the beginning of the semester and I don't have to deal with management again for a few months. My building does not have the nasty carpeting in the hallways and all my kitchen appliances are not olive. My only complaint is that since I live in one of the first five buildings, which have assigned parking, we only get one parking space next to the building. This causes a problem only if you live with another person who has a car, which my roommate does.

I too have been accepted to LECOM for 2007, but was put on the wait list for PBLP so I am hoping it has some movement or I may be attending UNECOM.

Yes, tell us, what is LECOM "really" like? Maybe I've been going to the wrong place for the last 8 months and missed what it is that you are alluding to, exactly?

I had written a long explanation, but the law dogs would have sure liked that, explore all your options...... I know now that I made a mistake.
 
For you movers....... lakeview/scenery hills was a nice place to live, it is one of the few that is close to school that has a garage.

LECOM is all I know. Like most people here, I have never attended any other medical schools. (its usually the kind of thing you only do once) So I suppose I won't ever know if a "mistake" was made on my part by coming here...and I really don't care.

I have never experienced a level of education that I felt was perfect. K thru now. (all school administrations suck...every school also has one...and each subsequently has students who continually complain about them. its the way of the world. deal with it)

Is my school flawless? Hell no. But I like it here. I'm having a good time in school. And I doubt I'd feel different elsewhere. (but hey...what do I know?...I'm just another first year "newbie")

Thanks so much, 2005, for not adding any intelligent facts to the conversation... I'm sure your cliches really make people think twice about my opinions of LECOM. I mean, afterall, there are so many positive facts posted..who wants to waste time reading those when they can be educated by your poetic ramblings?

To everyone else...

Don't worry. Most of the LECOM students I have run into this year are not total *****s. But there's always one bad apple, and they always seem to end up on SDN voicing their disdain. Why? Why do this? I just don't understand...but then again I am only a one-eyed newbie, so I shouldn't be TOO hard on myself.

You are as immature as you are obtuse. Talk to anyone in the top of my class, you will find complete agreement with what I have stated. Exploring other options was my advice, which is good advice in any situation. Statistically the school cannot support the load of students that they now attain. The main problem is rotation sites, which has nothing to do with what ever garbage someone has told you. You must forget you sarcasm and accept that there are problems at this school and while there is a lot to be desired, there are also negative facts that must be taken into consideration in order to make and educated decision.

OK, I think I'll add my 2 cents worth here. I have attended enough classes with hermione to know that she is neither immature nor obtuse. Judging by your response, however, you may be.

As I read the posts, it appeared that hermione was asking you to provide concrete examples of "what LECOM is really like." You responded with more ominous statements that did not back up your claim at all.

My experience at LECOM has been mostly wonderful. If anything changes in the second year, I'll let you know. Don't worry. I'll even provide concrete examples.

LECOM2005-

If you have information about rotation sites being limited can you be more specific? Please share it with the MS-1's so we can avoid the problem for next year and address it with the administration before our selection time comes (not saying they'll do anything about it, but it's worth the try). Nothing's going to get fixed at the school if the students don't make attempts to fix it. Thanks.

My name is Rob Graessle. I am an 2006 MSI at LECOM. So if you have any questions or comments, you can approach me now or later to share your opinion. First I want to apologize to the incoming students. I am sure an argument over the school you've chosen is not what you are hoping to read on here. I will first say congratulations on being accepted to medical school. It is quite an honor. I wake up everyday "living the dream." It is a great feeling. Medical School is best thing that has ever happened to me. The future really is wide open ...and I am pumped.

The 2006 class is a close-knit group. So if you ask any of us, you will mostly get positive responses about the school. 250 students and we take care of each other like family. There are positives and negatives wherever you choose to go. Sure... people complain here, but people complain everywhere. Some people are chronic complainers. You will find these sorts everywhere. Once you get into school and are able to attend some conventions, you will see. Students everywhere have good and bad things to say about what is going on at their school.

I encourage you to look at statistics. I think JAOA puts out some info every year. But realize that they are only good for one year. Each class is different and each year is different. The best thing you can do is go with your instincts. Research as much as you can, but in the end follow your heart.

Good Luck to each and every one of you no matter where you choose to go. I wish you all the best. Attitude is everything.

OK...How's everyone doing will all the paperwork to fill out? Is your FAFSA in yet? LECOM financial aid paperwork? Medical documentation?
 
I am a member of the class of 2006 and I would like to take this opportunity to say to LECOM2005 BITE ME. you are an idiot, with nothing positive to add to what is probably an already stressful situation for a new class of DO's. You have a responsibility to the osteopathic profession to help your fellow physician and support them; we already have the majority of the world to convince of our skills and abilities, do we also need to attack our peers. If you don't like LECOM do something to change it, drop out, transfer, otherwise shut up. I'm sure there is a great school in Nicaragua that can't wait to have you on their enrollment list. I am an MS-II at LECOM, and I would first like to say that in general I am satisfied with LECOM. No school is perfect, and I'm sure all of us know that. But maybe I can elaborate on the rotation site problem that LECOM2005 is alluding to. This year some people have had problems with rotation sites being dropped that they were counting on or certain areas (especially Erie) not having enough rotation sites so people are going to have to do some rotations outside of their area priority. And some rotation groups are more difficult to deal with than others. I was lucky to be in a group who was willing to work together and compromise, but some groups have stubborn people who are unwilling to compromise and always want their way. Life is like that, though, nobody is going to get along great all the time.

Don't mind any MS-IIs who may come to this site and sound a little disgruntled...We are all really stressed because the boards are in a little over 2 months and we can't wait to get out of school and start seeing real patients instead of doing classwork.

And by the way, congratulations to all the new members of the class of 2007! :clap:
 
Thanks for clearing that up, DO 2B. I appreciate it. Is this Erie rotation problem looking as though it might clear up? Which hospital is the problem? Sorry, for all the questions, but as an MS I, I'm still a bit in the dark regarding the rotation situation. As much as possible, I would like to stay in Erie since I am married and we own a house here. Any additional information that you could provide would be appreciated.😕

I'm not really completely sure what the specific problems were with the Erie area people (I am a Pittsburgh area person), but I know that people are having some problems now who were scheduled to do rotations at Metro, since it has now closed its doors. Next year will probably be better, I'm sure they will get everything figured out. The rotations are always subject to change, though, so no rotation is 100% guaranteed. Just adds a lot more fun to the process that is medical school. 😛
 
Thanks for the info and the positive attitude... It was a double exam day, so I needed to be reminded that medical school is "fun"!😀
 
Dear 2007,

We just found out this morning officially that your class will only be doing prosections for anatomy lab. This is where you just go around and look at cadavers that have already been dissected. There are benefits and drawbacks to doing it this way, so I can't tell you if it's a good thing or a bad thing. My opinion is that it's a poor solution to their big space/time problem in the anatomy lab. Just thought you'd want the heads up. I myself enjoyed prosection over dissection, but others felt differently.

Class of 2006 students will be dissecting the cadavers this summer under the guidance of the professors as a work-study type thing. That's all the info I have-no specifics.

I have to agree with LECOM 2005, I am also a prisoner of this school. Even when you leave the school grounds, the wrath follows....if you guys need examples, here is just a taste.

Unfortunately, I don't want to bring up the horrible day of 9/11, but I do remember it vividly. We were in class when the incident happened, and unfortunately there were classmates that were originally from NYC. People in my class lost loved ones that day, and we got lectured to not leave the school, not for security reasons, but because we would be breaking the attendance policy......

I can't believe that we aren't able to dissect a cadaver, that is what I was most excited about. The graduates students at my college get a one cadaver for every four students. That really brothers me.
 
I agree, even though I learned WAY more from prosecting than discecting, it does seem to be a right of passage. Although, you will most likely get a chance to disect after first year, as we (this years MSI's) will be disecting the cadavers your class will be looking at.
I know that prob. doesn't help, but I think maybe you may appreciate it when you get to spend your lab time looking at actual structures rather than picking through fat and fascia for hours at a time. With the condensed anatomy time schedule, it may work to your advantage.
(Just trying to find some positive points...but I know I would have felt the same as you last year at this time!)
 
HI I'm Jen Sepulvado from Oregon. I'm also looking for a roomate. I have a cat. (hopefully thats not a problem). I don't know much about the Erie area being all the way from the west coast but I have looked (phone/web) at a few places. I'm outgoing and I don't really have any preferences although I really need to learn to be a bookworm and study much much much more than I ever have! :laugh: I love the outdoors and I like to stucy in groups. I'm going the lecture pathway. Let me know what works for you. If we don't really match up maybe I can direct you to some people that I have already talked to. Best of luck!!!!!

I'm going to be in Erie May 14-18. I was wondering if anyone else was planning on looking around for a place to live and would also be in the area at that time. Maybe we could grab lunch and get to know each other???!!! Can someone please help this poor west coast girl??? :laugh: Let me know! Have a wonderful day!
