LECOM class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
actually, i haven't ridden a bike since last summer. i took the class because my friends all have bikes and i thought about buying one myself. however, the fact i was in graduate school at the time and planning on going to medical school i didn't have the money to buy one. IF i had a ton of money to get a bike, i'd love to pick up a HD Road King Police model though...

about the repeal of the helmet law... you'd never see me riding without one!

haha that's kinda bad homer.
I decided to get mine b/c i ride on my friend's a lot, so in case anything would happen i should know how to drive one. who knows if i will get my own bike or not. maybe a cheap (but working) one just to ride around town or something. but yeah it is scary b/c drivers are so stupid lately 😡

Yeah I'm kind of sensitive to the issue since I was a NYS EMT (which I saw tons of accidents) and one particular motorcycle accident I saw was when driving on the highway. A guy was doing like 75mph about a 1/8th mile in front of me when all of a sudden he spilled because of a car in front of him broke or cut him off, he slid at least a few hundred feet on the pavement. He was wearing a full faced helmet, leather jacket and wind pants. His windpants were shredded, leg abrasions, leather down to the inner lining, no abrasions and the helmet scraped down through the outter shell across the plastic face visor and most of the helmet. I'll admit up until that day I kinda thought helmets were useless since you were dead most of the time anyway if you got hit but this experience definitely opened my eyes.

I first responded (cause I was off duty), he didn't break a bone and aside from road rash on his leg he was, to my surprise, fine.

Cost of leather Jacket = $100
Cost of good Helmet = $250
Not leaving your brains smeared all over the highway = priceless

To each his own, I know people feel strongly about this freedom, it's all good.

Oh i was pissed when PA dropped the helmet law. I go to school in OH and people never wear helmets (i do always when i'm riding). Last summer when i was serving I got into a big fight with the cook b/c he had a bike and never wore a helmet. some people are so dumb! 😕

So does anyone here have a motorcycle license? I'm taking the basic rider course in june and after I complete it I get my license. I'm pretty excited. Just wondering!
I highly recommend the course you're taking. I've taken all of the state sponsored Motorcycle Safety Foundation courses offered here (basic, intermediate, and advanced) in Erie. They are VERY good and informational. I've been riding for over 35 years (yes, I'm old) and learned something in every one of the classes. Let me know if you need any other info. Good luck, they're a lot of fun!

KylieP54, thanks for the reply. I got the rest of the materials (physical, immunizations, background, financial aid, etc.) the next day in the mail. Hope there's enough time to get it all done before school starts! I'm in LDP too. I've got Netter, Rohen, Moore, and Hansen already for anatomy (took gross last year at Gannon U). Do you, or anyone else, know what the spec are on the OMM textbook? I also read that derm is a good one to get. Any others?

Hello all...I just wanted to drop a line and say hello again...my wife and I are due to arrive in Erie on the 6th (a week from Sun.)...we're both nurses and we thought we'd arrive early and get acclamated to the area prior to orientation...I'll be working at Hamot in the Shock Trauma ICU prior to school beginning...and some after classes begin...if anyone needs anything in the city or info from the school itself drop me a line at [email protected] if you're in town between the 6th and July 28th stop by our place...we're in Willowood #2920...the policy of my wife and myself is that the door is always open...hope to get to know all of you soon...dinner the night before orientation still sounds great...

Hey

You'll need the the Digiovanna book for OMM...assuming they don't change it.

hey! I'll be in Erie next week and the week after for my motorcycle course. Maybe I can stop by and say hi! I'll PM you! Is your wife going to work at a hospital in erie?

Hey Jen Great idea!...I'll check with my wife so that we can coordinate all of our schedules...My wife will remain working in Cleveland for a short time...I will PM you with our new contact numbers when I get them...Hope to meet up soon...Good luck in your class...

hey everyone!

so i'm in erie this week to do my motorcycle course. Today was the 1st night on the bikes- oh how fun! 🙂 we got into 2nd gear. I think it's kind of hard, but that's what i thought at age 16 learning to drive a stick! I'm really excited though! and don't worry I have a full faced helmet and i just ordered a jacket with armour from cycle city (it's really cute too). well i hope everyone is having a good week!

To the class of 2008,
I recently moved to Erie, PA. more specifically Brookwood Village. It is just the begining of June and my fiance and I do not know a soul in town. We are loving the summer here but want to meet up with other classmates before school begins. I read previously that many people wanted to get together just before orientation and I definatly want in!! Everyone has worked so hard to get here and we finally did it!! If anyone wants to get together just PM me. Also how do you sign up for the big brother/sister program?

Can't wait to meet everyone,
Kim

Hey!
I'm pretty sure the big bro/sis thing is done during orientation. I noticed your location says Florida, did u not wanna go to the florida campus? Just curious! Would love to meet you along with everyone else before orientation, hope to see you soon!
🙂

Hi! how do you like erie so far? it's kind of humid here this week- yuck! you guys should go to the beach you will really like it.
i think to sign up for the big bro/sis you get something in the mail and then you get your big bro/sis during orientation.

Hey all!

Yeah the big bro/sis thing happens on Sunday of Orientation. You should get something to fill out from the student government. The activities on Sunday are all student run. You'll hear presentations from the clubs, meet your big and talk with them, and sign up for the clubs...

Hey guys! You will be getting something in the mail in the next week or 2 regarding the big bro/big sis program. You fill out a form and then return it to me and I match you. You'll meet your big during orientation. Make sure the school has your new addresses!! See you guys soon!

I don't know about the rest of you guys and girls but I am so excited to meet everyone! I know that this is going to be a great class. Thanks for all the info on big brother/sister for orientation. We all need to meet up and have great big cook out. Brookwood village is not really the place to have one but I am sure the beach would be a fantastic place assuming the weather holds. Futbolene....maybe we can put our heads together and organize something in the near future!
Thanks,
Kim

This is my first post here and all this talk about motorcycles is making look forward to going here this fall. As of now it looks like I will doing the post bac program, but I figure making some connections before hand would be a good idea.
I would like to bring my motorcycle up with me but I'm not sure if it would be worth it if winter comes early, it is a bit of a drive for me and I would have to trailer it up. Some opinons would be nice.
I also need to get some housing for the year. Anybody looking for a roommate?
If anyone wants to go cycling before things get busy let me know. I like to ride and it is good way to get a view of the area. (assuming I don't bring my motorcycle).
-Rick

I'm excited to meet everyone too! I'm a former post bacc and my other friends who were in the program with me wanna get together for the dinner too. Cornellmedic, if u have any questions about the program just let me know! see u all soon!
😀 😀

Though true, winter often comes early and stays late here, it's generally rideable weather even into December or later, as long as it isn't snowing. I've got electrically heated leather chaps and vest that plug into my bikes, and have cruised up to Peek-n-Peak in January to watch the skiers with a foot of snow on the ground! As long as the roads are dry and gravel free, you can ride year round, if you're crazy enough, and have the right (warm/safe) equipment.

I think a cookout/gettogether is a great idea too. If everyone wants an outside event, perhaps Zuck Park would work. It's on the corner of Zuck and West Grandview, about a mile from the school. Presque Isle is another nice setting with LOTS of picnic/cookout locations. Otherwise, Erie is loaded with pub/taverns and restaurants which range from cheap, good food to the upper price, gourmet foods. Cheap/good/close to school is the Oakwood (McGarrey's) Cafe on W38th St. which also has a large dining area where everyone could see each other. Depends on what the consensus is on what cusine is desired and approx. price range. Any thoughts?

Last years group got together at Fridays on Upper Peach.

Thanks. Friday's is a nice national 'chain' place. Erie does have many places (indoor &outdoor) that are unique to this area. Anyone have any thoughts/suggestions about a local flavor for the 2008 class get-together?

i was thinking of something with an exotic atmosphere, maybe we could have pony rides in the parking lot and a KISS tribute band playing too. i will probably dress up like a pirate.

actually in all seriousness, it sounds like a good time and i'd be up for anything, looking forward to it!

I have a horse back home (miami) and I am looking into bringing my horse up to Erie. I have absolutly no idea where there would be a riding stable in the area. I am looking for a hunter/jumper barn for my horse to board. It's a beautiful monday here and I wish there was something to do. I can't wait for school to begin so that I have people to talk to. If anyone wants to get together this week and hang out give me a call!
Thanks,
Kim

Hey Jen,
Noticed you took the motorcycle class..I'm a third yr at lecom and just took the class too! Passed it officially yesterday....it was sort of fun. Anyway just thought what a small world it is....sdn, lecom, motorcycle safety class...anyway enjoy the rest of your summer! 😀

Hi everyone!!

I am very excited to meet everyone! I think its a great idea getting together the night before. Everyone sounds really cool and this should be a great class. I can't believe we start so early! Anyway I just wanted to say hi! See you guys soon!

Hey all future LECOM'ers..just wanted to FYI some info on an awesome weekend getaway...NIAGRA FALLS!!!...about 2 hrs. to the East via Buffalo...great weather/scenery/food/wine tasting tours...and on and on...drop me a line if y'all need some info on where to stay or what to see...

Anyone hear about their finicial aid package yet? I got something in the mail telling me that I needed to complete some forms online, and that the package would come via email, but that was weeks ago.

Also, I wonder if there will be a difference in times between LECOM and LECOMB.

Hey

Just fill out the fafas and the 1 page application online. Then just wait...you probably won't get the info until mid-July..don't worry. The financial aid people are very very good and helpful.

Oh and save some $$, you won't get your first check until Aug 16th.

Great advice, you will want to buy some anatomy books and stuff before the checks come in, so make sure you save some money or leave some room on the trusty old credit cards!

Hey yeah a cookout at the beach would be fun weather pending.... 🙂 we could all bring something- food, volleyball, beer, ect.

Hey everyone,

Looking forward to meeting everyone in just a little over a month from now! Getting together before orientation sounds like a good idea, I'm probably moving in around July 24th or so...

Are there any LECOM military HPSP students out there? I was commissioned into the Navy in March, and will be going to OIS next summer. So for now I'm just hanging out and enjoying the summer, hope you're all doing the same!

Congrats to both hermione and jen (I assume you passed too?!) on completing the MSF course. Maybe we can get ride organized for all the bikers in the class! Lots of nice places to ride around here. Also, class beach party sounds good.

If you really do like the exotic, pirate/parrot thing, I'm friends with a local Jimmy Buffet tribute band (used to do their videos/website), I could ask them. Don't know about the pony thing, but everything is negotiable! Whatever we do, I like the way you think. We should do something unique!

Yes I passed! 😀
that would be really fun- i just have to find a bike....

just got my letter. I guess drinks are on me at orientation.

I would also like to get in on a group ride, but I'm still debating on whether or not to bring up my bike. Does anyone out there have experience with towing a bike? I have towed it in a small open top box trailer and in the back of a pickup. What I would be planning on is using a small motorcycle specific trailer or one of the hitches that hold the front wheel and lets the rear wheel run on the ground. (think low budget) I'll probably bring it back home to garage it for the winter. Experience with Ithaca, NY has not left me with a great impression of the winters.

1 more thing. It's an '81 Yamaha seca 750. Not exactly a top of the line bike, but its mine.

any isp students looking for a place/roommate to stay with for the initial 12 weeks? I live in Buffalo so I will only live in erie for the first 12.

My dad tows his harley in a small open top trailer. Think it's easier than loading into a pickup, but yours is a bit smaller, so might not be as difficult. Don't have any experience w/ hitch towing, but have seen it done. I'm with you on bike styles. Both of mine are early 80's yamahas (80 XS1100 & 84 RZ350). Cheap, easy to work on and mine. So what if they aren't the most pretty. Biking is about the joy of riding, and good gas mileage doesn't hurt!

Hey Cornell, I spent lots of winters in Ithaca, my husband and lots of friends went to school out there (although not at Cornell, at Ithaca College)...I would compare the winters there with those in Erie...very similar (cold and crappy and gray) weather!

Anyway, hope you 08ers get together and have a chance to ride...I'm actually leaving Erie for Pittsburgh in a week and a half so I won't be around, but you guys should be able to get in some good rididng time...that is before anatomy starts!!! 😱

I'm kidding, you guys will be fine...you won't think so at first, probablly, but in 12 short weeks your lives will improve 110%. Good luck to you all, any questions feel free to pm me!

Greetings 😛 Just wanted to say "Congratulations" and hello to everybody. I'm very exciting bout coming to LECOM too and can't wait to meet everyone and get together, especially at this pre-orientation gathering ~ whatever/whenever/wherever it may be...

I'm a fellow ISP-er hoping to find others in my track that will wanna study together at times, so let me know if you're interested.

GOOD LUCK to us all!!! It's ONLY 1 month away!

I just got my housing information for LECOM (i'm a postbac). Included in the packet was a bunch of info about available places and a list with several other postbac students looking for roommates. I wanted to know if anyone out there is also looking for someone to share an apartment with. So, if you are a DO or postbac student and still need to find housing, send me an e-mail to find out if I would be a suitable apartmentmate.
