LECOM-Erie vs. DCOM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
eh, just cuzz youre part of the inaugural class doesnt mean youre a leader ... youre not leading anything.

however, there will be increased faculty support/bonding .. so, you'll get to know 'em better ...

I'm sure there will be bumps...but I look forward to being a leader rather than a follower.

Give me a break. 🙄

Go to the school that will open the most doors for you, not the one that will make you feel like a pioneer.

Perhaps my words came across the wrong way, but that being said, I do look forward to both the rewards and the challenges that will come with being in the first class...but I've always had a little bit of that in me.

I'm convinced that if the work is put in, going to DCOM will not hold a person back, and may very well help out in the end...

I was very impressed with the rotation list, and felt it was more organized and well put together than some of the other more "well established" schools in my area.

I also like the fact that the faculty members and leadership are well established in the field. I would hope that counts for something down the road.

I am in a really sticky situation people. I need your help. As you all know, I have had my hear set on dcom for the past few years. Many of you know I was waitlisted last year and this year was offered another interview. This year however, I am blessed with having an acceptance to another amazing school. However I am having a very difficult time and since I interviewed at DCOM last year I am trying to make my decision now. I am short on cash and on time. I wish I had more of both because I would most definitly not have to make this decision for a very long time. My deposit for LECOM is due the 26th and my dcom interview is on the 14th.

my heard is set on DCOM but my brain on LECOM.

many of the negatives people feel about these schools I could care less about. For example, lecoms food and drink, attendance and dress policies. Those are VERY low on my list of importance. I have adressed my points of conflict

LECOM

Pros
Cheap Tuition – 7-8k less a year
Rotations are done at some excellent hospitals (ex. Upmc)
100% first time board pass rate
More reputable and well Known

Cons
Weather COLD SNOW(my wife and I hate the climate, this is huge and my wife will be miserable in this climate. She will move with me wherever I go regardless)
Don't pay for rotations
No recorded lectures

DCOM

Pros
Tennessee weather
Area where I would like to practice(wife and I love and want to live in the south in rural areas. this is a very big factor. she came with me to my interview last year and we both loved the school)
Recorded lectures
up and coming school

Cons

More Expensive tuition
No jobs in area for spouse(this is huge)
New school, not as established and not as many connections YET
Very clinical focus first two years (waste a lot of time on irrelevant material imo thats not good cause I want as much time to study for the boards)
90% first time board pass rate.
Waitlisted me the first time. just wish they accepted me.

let me know what you guys think? just to sum it up, I am accepted to LECOM and have an interview coming up at DCOM. Yes, I am not accepted even though I feel I have a good chance. But I am VERY tight on money and LECOMs deposit is placing some pressure.

I feel you, that's the situation I'm in with WCU and LECOM. I too love the South and would love to stay here. Let me just say that for the reasons you listed, I would definitely consider LECOM for financial reasons alone. Not only would you save the 7k a year, but your wife would have so much more potential for a good, well paying job to help you through med school financially. That is huge. I have felt the crushing impact of poor finances through school and there is little that will cause you to stress out and negatively impact you more. I really think that this point is HUGE. What would make the two of you unhappier, unemployment or cold weather? I would certainly assume unemployment would be a much greater burden. Rightfully so.

As for wanting to practice in the rural south, this can happen whether or not you go to DCOM. Believe me when I say opportunities for practicing here abound. Apply to residencies down here and practice down here, if you'd like. LECOM will certainly not hinder you there.

Yeah, the weather in Erie sucks, if I go there I'll hate it too. What else can be said but suck it up? Weather is only weather, it does not dictate happiness, and needn't even influence it.

first off, congrats. that rocks. i would attend your interview at DCOM and see how that goes. Maybe they will get back to you in time. Wait until the last day you can. the cheaper tuition rocks but if you really want to go to DCOM, at least how the interview goes.

I am telling you avoid LECOM like the plague. I have not heard one good thing about the school. Multiple people that are familiar with the school told me not even to apply. Not sure why I did anyways?? 😕

I feel bad you have had some people lie to you, but I'm a 3rd yr at LECOM and wouldn't change a thing. I chose the school specifically for their well established PBL program and it has been everything I could have wanted.

The choice of school needs to depend on YOUR OWN VIEWS of the school and your feelings on their educational programs. Does the program fit your learning style? Will it enable you to succeed? Will it set you up for success in an incredibly difficult and demanding profession?

The things that DO NOT matter...
-hearsay
-second-hand crap comments
-most of all: people's opinions on here

It's your education, not anyone elses.
I was nervous to attend LECOM because of some of the things I read on here, but then I realized 99% of people's whining stemmed from things that weren't problems... dress code🙄/attendance policy🙄
if those are the biggest issues then it's not all that bad.

DCOM is a stellar school.
Choose the one that fits you best, the one that will make you a better doctor than all the others.

Thanks a lot nman. I'm very happy. I'm trying to scrounge up cash to go righ now. I would not be dissapointed attending lecom. It would be awsome actually. I was very impressed and could see myself bieng there for the next four years for sure. I just also feel the same way about dcom and have felt that way since last year when I was waitlisted

Timaq thank you for the post. I'm taking it into consideration without a doubt
