LECOM general info?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am a current MS I at LECOM and feel the school is great. I did a masters program at Boston University School of Medicine where I took several of the medical school classes. In comparison I'd say LECOM is very much up to par. I would say they're slightly below BU's standards, but the focus of the education at the 2 institutions is completely different. I'm not sure what you consider a reasonable cost of living, but just to give you an idea you could easily get an apartment for around $600-$700 (give or take, depending on what you're looking for). For myself, I live in one of the nicer apartment complexes and pay $860/month (this is for a 2 bedroom, 2 car garage, washer/dryer, and some other goodies). Overall, on a monthly basis my budget is roughly $1000. I'm living w/ my fiance who pays half the rent, so I guess technically my monthyly budget is about $500. This monthly budget includes rent, food, phone, internet, electricity, gas, and digital cable. All in all I'd say it's very reasonable.
As far as an overall impression of the school... Some of the rules are a little wierd, but it's not so bad. They prepare you well for what's to come in the future. Not to mention, the experience is really what you make of it. If you have any questions feel free to drop me a PM or post another message.

I will be there Nov. 11, too. Have you heard anything about different about LECOM Bradenton than LECOM Erie, besides it is only the PBL track?

I visited in September and the buildings are about the same, very clean and obviously new looking. It does seem like there is nothing around the area, but I heard it is a growing community.

watch out for the gators in their backyard. They say that they eat interviewees........ j/k
I interviewed at bradenton and was totally caught off guard by how rural it was. I thought it was funny that they kept trying to impress us with the fact that the area was "growing".
It would take 10 years of constant development for it to grow into a small/medium sized town. And growing seems to mean that if you sell land to developers who only build condos and strip malls with starbucks, applebees and ponds with fountains in the middle, you will magically grow into a city.
My personal opinion was that they should focus on the fact that they are a "rural" school, and use that to their advantage. Some people really liked the fact that they were reminded of their home towns. Im not trying to be condescending, I understand from the students and faculty that they love the school. It just wasnt right for me. Good luck

anyone for Erie

I was born and raised in Bradenton and am a current MS1 at LECOM-Bradenton, so I can give any and all info on the area.
First of all, Bradenton is NOT rural. You have to understand that the area the school is built in has just been developed in the past few years. Bradenton stretches from the Gulf coast on the west to well past where LECOM is on the east, bordering the Manatee River on the north and University Parkway on the south. Immediately surrounding the school is rural, yes, but drive 5 minutes south on Lakewood Ranch Blvd, or 15 minutes east on SR 70 and it's certainly not rural. The main area in which us students live and hang out is the Sarasota/Bradenton border, which is made up of University Parkway. Drive through Lakewood Ranch on Lakewood Ranch Blvd going south, take a right onto University and you are in this area. Go 15 minutes east on University and you are in Sarasota just north of downtown and just east of the Gulf.
In summation, if you plan on sleeping in the field across the street from school, yeah you'll be in a rural area. We only go to school for classes, we don't live there. You need to drive around the area more to get a feel for it. As far as Lakewood Ranch development - it is the second fastest growing area in the country. In the next two years they will be finishing the "Main Street" area of LR, which will consist of 150 upscale stores/restaurants, a 20-screen movie theatre, and a 10-screen indie theatre. It's not rural, it's suburbia. Population is 200,000.

I am interviewing on 4th, this thursday! hmm, was hoping someone would be there 😳
