Ok...about the 13 cadavers...
It is somewhat confusing the way that they run it, and it does have its good and bad points. Let me explain.
The class is divided into 4 groups (A, B, C, D). Now, mind you, this is the entire class during anatomy (the lecture class will be smaller once anatomy is over with and PBL and ISP students go on their own). Each group is assigned two dissection regions (out of 8 total). Group A started out dissecting the back using the 13 cadavers (4/5 people per cadaver). They work hard for the back dissecting, but then the other groups (B, C, D) will come in and prosect for a few hours each week. In other words, they observe what group A dissected and roam around the room to view different bodies. Once the back dissection was over, group B dissected next (the thorax), while A, C, and D prosected. We are now on the second round of dissection, where group A is up again doing the head. They assigned us one "hard" and one "easy" dissection. So, I did neck (hard) and will be doing pelvis and perineum (easy).
Good points: the other groups don't waste time having to pick through fat, fascia, etc. and can just go in and look and leave (a huge time saver); there are only 13 bodies-you get to know the structures on certain bodies (eg. Tank 1 may have a good right recurrent laryngeal nerve that is taggable)
Bad points: there are only 13 bodies to look at, and it gets crowded before a test when everyone is trying to see the structures on all the bodies; prosections sometimes just don't cut it (no pun intended)-5 people is a bit too much per group (4 is fine)
This is the first year they're doing it this way. There are more students so they had to account for it somehow. The nice thing is that we'll complete anatomy in 3 months of intense work. The bad thing is that we're being rushed through it, and not being lectured on major topics (more work for us). HOWEVER, we have a very light schedule compared to last year and more time to read and study. I don't care for it too much, but it's a personal thing.
Feel free to throw any other questions my way. Take it easy.
