LECOM or UT-Memphis?

I got accepted to LECOM-Bradenton and UT-Memphis for the Pharm. D program. Any insights to help make my decision as to which school to attend? Feel free to vote in the poll above

I was leaning towards Florida because it's...Florida! But also because Memphis has high crime rates

Lecom b is cheap...I've found great apartments that are 3 bedroom for 800-1200...cheap living and tuition is 19k, not bad for a private school...facility is new ...I don't know much about memphis but I bet it has its pros as well

Glad to hear housing is cheap. Are you a current student at LECOM-B?

I really liked the location of LECOM bradenton when I went down there for my interview. My first impressions of the surrounding town were nice retirement homes, yachts, and many golf courses (great potential for a job in geriatric pharmacy) - my parents would follow me because they would retire there. I would have chosen LECOM but I decided it was too far for me to commute back and forth from Jersey to FL during holiday seasons. So if the commute for you is not a hassle, I think you should definitely choose Lecom-B over memphis.

I really liked the environment as well. The commute from FL to TX is not a big deal for me. I'm really just seeing if anyone posts something about either school that will greatly impact my decision. So far LECOM-B is my choice.

I would choose UT between the 2 schools. More recognized as a learning institution, and if you care about rankings, it is one of the top 16.

Would you go with cost first and weather second? They cost the same for out of state- unc or ucsd: where would you go if you got in to both?

I have family close there and I have been scouting the prices for rent and board...just got an invite from UF so we will see if I get in

Well, we got 6 votes for Memphis and 5 votes for LECOM. There doesn't seem to much hinting in either direction.

Don't know about the LECOM location, but I do know that Memphis is pretty much the armpit of the south. And yes, I am from Tennessee, and have visited Memphis many times, though not more often than I have had to. But I tend to place more emphasis on the place I am living than the actual school. UT is an awesome school, but I could not possibly picture myself living in Memphis for 4 years. Blech.

I feel the same way. LECOM is in Bradenton, FL which is just beautiful. Memphis...I agree with what you said. I think I will go to LECOM at this point.

I found that UT-Memphis is ranked 16th. However, LECOM is not ranked at all. I even looked up the main campus and they don't seem to be ranked either. What's up with that?

Its all about what you want to do as a pharmacist. If you want to go into research, then you're going to want to attend a school with a strong research background. If you want to do retail, then it really does not matter which school you go to. The whole ranking system means nothing if you plan to become a retail pharmacist.

Thanks for the response Lance, but what if you want to work in a clinical/hospital setting? inpatient pharmacist, nuclear pharmacist, etc.

It really dosent matter either because remember that there are residency matches so it depends on the mathes, your grades and even a lil bit a connections...lecom may not be ranked because it is a fairly new school and most ranked schools are public universities that have been around for decades, it dosent mean that a pharmacist you graduated from a less tier school will have less of a chance as a top tier one...overall your naplex and grades will be the factors in clinical residensies. I plan on doing something clinical as well

I can only hope you're right. I've e-mailed LECOM to see what types of rotations they offer. After getting back from Memphis, one of the sheets they handed us was of all the different rotation sites available to choose from. It was quite a big list. Got me thinking about what LECOM offers as options. As for LECOM elective courses, there are only 4 or 5 to choose from. Started wondering if they had few rotations too. We'll see what they say when they get back to me.
