"Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) graduated its largest medical and pharmacy classes on Sunday, June 11 at 2 p.m. at the Louis J. Tullio Arena. The class of 2006 is made up of 203 medical students and 87 pharmacy students." LINK

I thought they start out with around 240 students. Where'd the 30 something student go? Just curious.

The class of 2006 started out with only 223 students. Some may have been moved back a year due to poor academic performance. Some, of course, could have failed out. There were a total of 95 first-year students in all osteopathic schools in 2002-2003 who withdrew or were dismissed. 38 were granted a leave of absence. That equates to 4.3% of the total of osteopathic students in their first year. If you look at the total number of osteopathic students that year (OMSI, II, III, and IV), 10.7% fit into those two categories. Thus, LECOMs attrition rate performance (9.1%) is better than the average.

Keep in mind the average allopathic US med school has 125 students per class. LECOM has just over 200, so it is not really that much bigger. Also keep in mind that the reason LECOM-Erie is the "largest" med school is because it also graduates a PharmD class. I believe PCOM-Pa actually has more OMS-Is than LECOM-Pa.

Also keep in mind that the reason LECOM-Erie is the "largest" med school is because it also graduates a PharmD class. I believe PCOM-Pa actually has more OMS-Is than LECOM-Pa.

The link does not say LECOM-PA is the largest med school...they say they graduated their largest class. As in, they have more graduates this year than in previous years.

I don't think that it's normal at any school, but it is often an option. Unlike Carribean schools, who really don't care whether or not you pass (they have 400 more people with good credit waiting for your seat), US schools actually want you to succeed. Most schools have a way to help you through if you struggle a little at the beginning. LECOM, for instance, has a remediation program where you are offered a chance to study and pass an exam after you fail a course or PBL module. If you make 70% or better ,then you can continue. You have to pay extra for it, but it's still better than outright dismissal. If you don't pass the remediation exam, then the SPG committee will either recommend dismissal from the college or repetition of the school year.

Note that passing the remediation exam will give you a grade of C, but an asterisk will be placed on your transcript. Yet, that's still better than outright failure and dismissal. How often does it happen? I really couldn't tell you...but it does sometimes.

They will also give you the option of going down to the post bacc program and then returning again in the fall. At least it keeps you from going home.

How do you know this? I thought PCOM-PA has the largest MS1 class.

My class (PCOM 2009) started with 276 and I think we have lost roughly 10%, if you are talking semantics maybe 9%. I can't imagine that LECOM has the largest school counting all programs. It must be counting the branch campus as well. Although, PCOM has a branch campus with roughly 80 students...I think? We also have a biomed program at both campuses, a physician assistant program, masters in forensics, masters in Psych, and Phd in Psych. They must be talking about their largest class, not the largest school.

I think they are referring to THEIR largest graduating class ever.

At graduation this year, it was stated that LECOM will have the largest medical school with next year's class. Like I said earlier, it may or may not include FLECOM... it wasn't clear at graduation.

At least I know the frequent Lecom bashers are alive and well on SDN. I hadn't heard from them for awhile. I was worried. 🙄
