I am currently applying to both allopathic and osteopathic medical schools this year. I have been accepted to LECOM-Erie and paid the deposit. A few weeks ago I received an acceptance to Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. I like MSUCOM more than LECOM but I would really like to go to an MD program. I am on the waitlist for a few allopathic schools. The problem with MSUCOM is that it starts on June 18th and most MD waitlist movement won't happen until after May 15th. If I choose MSUCOM I will have a very small window of time to get accepted off a waitlist. LECOM doesn't start until August so I would have a longer time period to get moved off the waitlist.

One of the MD programs that I am on the waitlist for is Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Would submitting my paper work for MSUCOM effect my chances of getting accepted off of MSUCHM's waitlist ?

Is MSUCOM a better school than LECOM ? I am very happy to be in the situation that I am but I'm not sure what I should do.....any advice or insight would be appreciated.

Doubt it.

Yes.

MSU is a pretty good school... And if you're in-state I think you'd be a major fool not to place a deposit. If you're oos, then well LECOM might be a better idea ( like 30k less debt a year easy).

definitely MSU without question... from curriculum to rotations to residency match

If you're a Michigan resident, MSU. If not, LECOM, unless they throw a big scholarship your way. You could buy a house with the money you'd save.

I agree. Unless, of course you get that big OOS scholarship they give to people in which case going to LECOM wouldn't really be that much cheaper. 😉

MSUCOM is better than LECOM, that is, if you're in state. I don't think I would even apply if I were out of state (but who's to say..)However, how secure do you feel with yourself that you may get into MSU's MD program? msu, just from snooping around the forums (I'm applying there too) has a lot of movement. I have friends that have been accepted to MSU off of wait lists (for the MD program, don't know many from the DO program) a couple of weeks before the classes started. People that typically apply to MSU (both MD/DO) also apply to Wayne State and U of Mich, and most of the time if they're accepted to MSU and another one of the latter 2, they go to the latter two.
Apparently, getting wait listed at the U of Mich might as well be a rejection though.
Just personal experience.

Yes I am a Michigan resident. I am 99% sure I will be going with MSUCOM but I plan on holding on to the LECOM acceptance for a little while longer. Are there any rules against holding onto multiple DO acceptances ?

I don't think there are any rules about it.

If you're already on the CHM waitlist and would prefer to go there out of all three, you can still set yourself up with a place to live in EL, etc. as if you were going to COM. That way, if you get pulled off the CHM waitlist at the last minute, you would already be in E. Lansing and would just be walking to the Radiology building instead of Fee Hall.

Hearsay, but MSU's DO program is arguably stronger than its MD program, at least going by residency placement within the state.

Well, this analysis has some holes as we don't know if the populations differ significantly enough to explain why there may be a difference in things. Not to mention residency placements are rather bad indicators of a classes strengths and more and indicator of the classes particular interest. A better indicator would be their board scores, which however are never released 🙁.

But yah, both MSUCOM and MSUCHM are both really good choices.
