I'm having trouble deciding between the two schools. LECOM's deposit is $2,000 while MUSC is $485. The tuition is a lot cheaper for LECOM (I'm out of state) but its a newer school, should that scare me? Does any one have any pro's and con's about either school? I need to make a decision this week!

If I were in your position I would pick MUSC. The school is established and as far as I can tell well regarded. The major specialties are represented there in the form of residency programs. This means that if you find you enjoy a particular area of dentistry you have access to faculty and can make connections if you decide to specialize.

I think this is one situation where going to the cheaper school is not your best option.

I don't know that any school is worth $150,000 more to attend. Go to LECOM

From their websites, I gathered a rough estimate of the cost of tuition difference being 10k and fees difference favoring LECOM around 5k annually. Quick estimate shows LECOM being 60k cheaper without interest. If you're only interested in general dentistry, LECOM wins. If you have an interest in specializing, choose MUSC. Having talked to adcom at LECOM, they've specifically stated not to come with an interest in specializing.

For 60k difference I wouldn't even consider LECOM over MUSC

Doc Toothache's numbers show total cost of attendance to be 150K more, including cost of living and other fees.

The other factors that I have playing for me are the HPSP Scholarship (Military). I find out at the end of January. Also, if I don't get the scholarship I can get instate tuition for the last 4 years at MUSC if my wife works. And the last factor is that I interviewed in UT Huston (my home state) and they said they would get back to me by the end of January or February. So if I was to get accepted somewhere else I would like to lose the cheaper deposit at MUSC as apposed to loosing 2,000 at LECOM.

Sounds off, but too tired to check

I'd definitely go with MUSC.

If you don't get the HPSP this year, you can always reapply for the 3 year.

Does your wife have a preference?

True. My wife prefers MUSC. I think I'v made up my mind to accept the offer from MUSC. I like the city, the established feel, and the opportunity for residency.

MUSC is a great school in a beautiful location. I think you are making the right choice.

Congrats on the acceptance! MUSC's new dental clinic will blow your ****ing mind. The faculty and staff are kinder than anywhere else I've been and I absolutely love it here. We're all like family!

just go to MUSC plz even if it is 50k more expensive. LECOM has too many problems for you to deal with being a dental student there.

you definitely don't want to graduate dental school without confidence to practice right away and have to go AGED (which will happen to you at LECOM)
