LECOM vs NYCOM vs PCOM

I have been accepted into LECOM erie, my number one choice, I liked the school and the location.

I have also been invited to interview at NYCOM and PCOM. I know that UMDNJ, Kentucky, and Michigan are the top notch Osteopathic schools, are NYCOM or PCOM a cut above.

I was going to cancel my NYCOM interview and ecerning over the PCOM interview.

LECOM-Erie is your number one choice and you've been accepted. What's your question? 😕

NYCOM is supposed to have a huge class but great clinicals. PCOM is the same I belive and also has a great rep. At the end the best thing to do is check out at leat 3 schools and go to the one that fits you the best.

PCOM IS one of the top DO schools. Don't forget it is one of the oldest DO schools.

NYCOM is part of NYIT and has much more extras to offer.

BUT.. once again you said you got your first choice... what are you looking for?

LECOM-Erie is your first choice? you actually like the location and the school? hmm, i've never actually heard anyone say that those were there reasons for choosing LECOM. but more power to you. for the most part people seem to have reservations about those 2 aspects of LECOM (location in Erie, 1 building, along with early early classes, mandatory attendance, dress code, no research, etc.), but every school has its pluses and minuses. the big draws for LECOM are, some people like the curriculum, and they have a ton of clinical rotation sites in some cool places. oh and Erie isn't bad at all, its just cold.

have you seen or visited any other DO schools yet? if LECOM-Erie is your first choice after considerable thought and research, then congrats to you. but in my opinion, you might at least want to check out some of those other schools, especially if you have no idea what else is out there. this is by no means a knock on LECOM-Erie, i have good friends there, i'm just an advocate of checking out all your options and finding out where you fit best for yourself.

edit: there is a school in kentucky, my bad. sorry to the PCSOM peeps, wasn't thinking clearly.

LECOM is my number one choice because I love the school and area! Guess you have heard of two people now who love the school for these reasons.

Thanks for all the weigh in's. I appreciate everyones opinions. But let me tell everyone why LECOM is my number one choice.

First I come from 3 hours north of Erie, so it's actually a summer paradise from my perspective.

And 3hours from home is managable for traveling back when I need a break.

Cost of living (23rd most affordable community in the US.) 1 bdrm can cost as low as 300 a month, makes it easier to survive the med years. Compare that to Chicago or Philly and that's 3-4k less per year. 16k over the four, and that's just rent.

So that why.

Yes but do you like the curriculum and the possible career oppurtunities that LECOM offers you? IT might be more expensive to live in Chicago or Philly, but if they offer an academic environment that suits you better, you might want to consider that.

Whatever reasons make a school your top choice are YOUR reasons and you shouldn't have to justify them to anyone else. PCOM was my first choice for several reasons and there are many reasons why I didn't want to go to LECOM.

Your medical school education is what you make of it. PCOM students are lucky in that we come from a school that has a solid reputation, particularly in the northeast, so there is that benefit. People in western PA know LECOM very well and their students have a good reputation out there.

Go where you feel you fit in the best. Make a list of pros and cons and then really think about it. It is an important decision. You will get a strong medical education at several schools, but you need to ask yourself where you will be happy for the next 4 (or more) years.

Thanks everyone. I think I will heed everyone's advise and at least go to the interviews. I have not traditionally been a religious man, but at 32 I decided to get my bachelors and apply to med school, never thought I'd get in. But here I am, so I will keep my eyes open, go the interviews and see where god guides me.
