Legacy

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am not sure about step parents, even though the connection can't hurt. Yet, I do know that my father attended OHSU for dental school and my sister attended their for med school. I applied there this year, but because of the fact that I am out of state I didn't even get an interview. Next year I am going to improve my DAT's and get in state residency. According to one of my fathers friends, who was in his dental class and is still associated with OHSU, this should help. Long story short, I think that it mainly helps because of the connections that you have.

Does anyone know if step parents count as legacy? and does anyone know how much legacy actually carries weight? thanks

Legacies sometimes will be rejected. How much cash did this step parent donate ? That could have an impact.

Great answer right there. Legacy matters most when he/she has donated to the school since graduating. I have a close family friend thats donating every year to his school so that in 10 years when his son is old enough to apply they wont be worrying about interviews.

I don't think money is always the reason. I'm sure legacy helps if they are still friendly and keep in touch with faculty & staff at the school.

thank you so much i hope this legacy somewhat helps!

Hmmm.... Money is the motivation. You parents donate, you have an in (usually). Why? Hopefully you'll donate in the future and your parents sent in some cash.

At one of my interviews, there was a girl who would not shut up about how her dad went to This School for both his DDS/DMD *and* his specialty residency *and* he's an active alumni who donates a lot to the school because he felt it was such a good school it deserves his donations ... seriously, she must have mentioned it 18595081 times to everybody she encountered. I can almost guarantee you she got in even though her DAT and GPA were probably lower than everybody else who was in the interview group. My satisfaction was overhearing that she got a parking ticket for thinking she could park illegally during the interview because after all, she is a special angel whose father practically bought the school, she ought to be able to park her Mercedes wherever she darn well pleases on its campus.

My parents don't donate. So it can't be that.

Thats annoying. I didn't mention my legacy at all. It would not have been appropriate. I don't want to get in just because of it. The director of admissions brought it up first and told me to throw a hello to my family.

on the other hand... i have pre-dent friends who are legacies, and daddy gives the school money, and blah blah blah, and some of them didn't even get interviews at these places.

i think it just depends on the school.

ultimately, daddy can give money, but when you're a dental student in over your head daddy can't get your grades for you.

What were their grades and how much/often was daddy giving them? Trust me if it is a significant amount over a long period of time it'll get you in....sad but true.

Where's armorshell... he'll tell you if legacy means anything or not...

I had 3 generations on my father's side go to NYU dental. My dad, grandfather and great-grandfather. My great-grandfather went before it was even associated with NYU (New York Dental College) and my grandfather was a clinical instructor for some time.

I didn't receive an interview, let alone an acceptance, with stats that were acceptable enough to be accepted at NYU's cross-town rival.

I have 6 family members who are USC School of Dentistry Alumni (mom, aunts and ucles). I had not heard from any schools and got worried so I told my aunt who teaches there if she could ask what is going on with my app. She spoke to a few people and they thought she was trying to push for my acceptance because of my families history with the school. They told her that it was completely unethical, and that although it used to happen in the past it is something they no longer do.

My dad went to OHSU and is and active contributor. The first time I applied (with average stats), I got an interview in January, and then got waitlisted...

The second time I applied, with my current stats, I got an interview in January AGAIN, but only after I got accepted to 6 other schools and had to put down a deposit.

It really doesn't count for anything these days...

You are right cybermech...

1. Well My father's Uncle graduated from Alabama, I'm not a resident so I didn't even bother applying.

2. My 2nd cousin runs the Endodontist residency at UCSF, I have not heard anything from them other than they said I never turned in my secondary but they did cash my check so I faxed my copy up next day and I have not heard from them since other than they did receive it.

3. My uncle graduated from Loma Linda, I did get an interview but the first thing they asked me when I sat down in the office for my one on one was when did my father go to LLU and I responded that it was my Uncle that went to LLU. I got rejected 3 days after they invited me for the open house.

4. My father graduated from Missouri and I got rejected right after my primary.

So out of my 4 legacy ties I have 0 chances with them so I'm holding out on all my non responsive schools to maybe send me an interview soon.

A few of those a really weak "legacy" classifications

"Legacy" is not a synonym for competitive stats.
