Here's a msg I sent an anonymous sdn member today to address my concerns. I thought that it'd be a good idea to repost this on here for the masses - are they legitimate concerns? Or am I just being overly concerned (I tend to have a very low tolerance for uncertainty 🙁 )
AOA residencies and Visas for Canadians:
Hi xxx - been researching this all day and can't seem to find an answer:
Are Canadian DO grads readily sponsored for Visas by the AOA residencies?
As a holder of only a Canadian citizenship, I would eventually like to come back - hence have my eyes set on an ACGME residency. However, I know that only 70% of DOs who apply match into an ACGME residency. Have you thought about this? Any concerns? Seems with the increase in US MD/DO spots and relatively stagnant residency expansion, it will be increasingly difficult for us when we graduate DO to land something. I would assume even more so as non-US residents. Thoughts?
I am ok with doing an AOA residency. I'm confident that BC and other provinces will soon move to recognize these (if I'm not mistaken, Alberta already does?) But I have no idea whether or not AOA residencies are good fall-backs for non-US DO grads?
Thanks
note -I hope that I'm not breaking any rules, but I will be posting this in the Osteopath student arena as well.
