Length of commute for M1/M2?

I was just curious what kind of commutes people make to classes every day?

Right now I live a 45 min drive from campus (not including parking or walking time) but I definitely want to move closer to MSU before August. Of course we're not talking big city traffic or anything--just East Lansing. Of course MSU recommends living as close to campus as possible but my significant other works in Detroit and we don't want to move tooo far west for his sake. I think we'll probably move within a 20 minute drive.

Any thoughts on that kind of daily commute? Any experiences?

I'd just like to make an educated decision given than I'll be driving it every day for the next 2 years+.

Ill be making a 25-30 minute commute every day to class next semester. It's going to SUCK. My boyfriend and I just bought a house together and he's attending law school so we needed to find something in the middle for both of us. I just pray he finishes school early so I dont have to do this for another 3 years.

I wouldn't worry too much about your commute--it doesn't sound TOO long. A lot of people in my class drive that far and it's not a big deal to them. I live close to campus and I still have a 20 min drive due to traffic. Use your time driving for other things. Drink your coffee in the car in the morning so you are awake when you get there, relax on the way home, etc. The first 2 years it isn't bad, but you may not like it once rotations start.

15 minute commute for me. additional 5 minutes to walk from the parking lot that is so far far away 😉 i've heard of people at my school commuting 30-40 min. I kind of like the drive bc its a great tiem to destress, sing along to the radio and whatnot.

I totally agree with this, it has helped me to unwind many a time. However, my commute is anywhere from 35min to 1.25hrs on bad days...that can get really, really frustrating at times!

Hi there,
I had a 45-minute Metro (subway) ride to school each day. I would use that time to preview my days lectures so I would be prepared for class. On some days, it was just nice to watch people and relax mentally.

I also made my own study tapes and listened to them as I rode the trains. I would put on my mirrored shades, a baseball cap and headphones. It kept people from pestering me. In the afternoon, I would often nap on the train. By the time I got home, I was refreshed and ready for my night's study. I would not advocate napping if you are driving.

You can make some study tapes to listen to while you drive. Don't tape your lectures and listen to these! No one should have to listen to a lecture more than once. 🙁

Commuting is not so bad if you multi-task. On the other hand, you have to be a little more organized. No rolling out of bed and sitting in class five minutes later. Also, being further away keeps school and politics in perspective. When you want to be sociable, you can. If not, you are far enough away so that it doesn't matter.

I would definitely be the kind of person to roll out of bed 5 min. before class if I could! I should add that right now I make a 50 minute drive to my summer job--so I'm used to driving that far, but there's no long hours of studying involved yet. 😳 Thanks for all the input! 😛

I'm going to be driving a half hour to school and back.

I don't mind though, because I like driving. I need some space in between me and the med school.

so u'll be stayin in Brighton area or somewhere in Livingston county? Howell?
shouldnt be too bad except winter time, then again u can pick and choose what classes u go to, MSU has lectures on mp3 online, and scribes now, so thats good.
Did u get parkin pass for radiology-lot 100? u should!! i was in the building yesterday meeting with 2 of our classmates plannin community service stuff for SNMA org.

I know folks at chm who commute, my girl used to drive an hr from grand rapids, her and some others had a car pool going. maybe u can find others.

Look 4wd to seein u next month, my commute is like 8 mins drive 😀

Lexy, atleast you don't have to deal with snow in South Florida....I'm moving closer to med school to avoid driving through dreary snow.....I absolutely despise driving in the snow. 🙁

True, I'd imagine driving in snow is not fun. In Florida we have to contend with storms that make you think the messiah is coming and the end of the world is near......

I currently have about a 60 minute commute to class. 30-40 minutes driving, then about a 20 minute walk through a beautiful park to campus. I listen to books on tape during the drive, which provides a nice diversion from med school life. I actually enjoy the commute right now.

However, I don't think I'll feel the same way about commuting come 3rd year. It's one thing to drive in to class and then head home 3 hours later, but quite another when 3rd year hits and I'm post-call having not slept a wink in the past 24 hours... I have a feeling that audio books won't really seem very enjoyable in that situation. In fact, I'm not even sure if I'll be able to drive without falling asleep in that situation.

Yall with long commutes... mad props for attending class. In college I sometimes wouldnt go to classes 10 minutes away because I wanted to sleep in, and some of you are spending 2 hours a day commuting. I definitely need to work on being more like yall. 🙂
