Is there a large difference in quality between the different lens kits and frames? Someone mentioned metal lens rings are higher quality, but plastic are far lighter to carry. Any opinions or advice on purchasing certain styles or brand names? thanks!

Most are comparable to one another. Lens-size is what matters: I do not favor the smaller trial lenses, as they can be very restrictive to the performance of several clinical procedures.
