Anyone know of any relatively less competitive gen surg programs on the east coast? West coast? I realize every program is very competitive, but relatively, which ones have less applicants and are easier to get into? Thanks.

mercer in savannah, ga...or so i've heard

is that because they recently had an opening in their program or because you actually heard they are a weaker program?

I would have thought hard about training there as I like Savannah and have friends there. It's also a pretty hospital. I know nothing of the strength of their training.

just word of mouth from friends in the area. this info is a bit dated (2-3 years). i will add though, that i do know one of their graduates who is a great surgeon and has a thriving bread and butter practice in the metro-atlanta area. but, it is still thought to be the least competitive program in the state. savannah is a nice town, though...except for the smell.

What does Savannah smell like? I'd always envisioned it smelling like some good food from Paula Deen's "The Lady and Sons!"😀

Probably most of the ones in central Pennsylvania:

Penn State
Pinnacle Health, Harrisburg
York
Geisinger
Lehigh

Yeah...If her food smells like sewer  Actually, I've heard the food at Lady and Son's isn't all that spectacular. But this was from true Southerners, so her food isn't as unique as it may be to people from other parts of the country. Savannah has a huge paper factory and the smell of sulfur permeates everywhere... And their water tastes funny.

i've always thought of it as a combo of wet a$$ and rotten eggs

Anywhere else?

There's not any good data on this as no one publishes average scores or any other stats on a per program basis. I think you'd do better by culling programs which obviously are competitive.

Go to FREIDA or acgme.org and print out a list of every program in the states that interest you. Go through and cross out those you know to be competitive (MGH, etc.)

If by "coast" you mean a program that's within sight of an ocean, it will be a pretty short list. If that means states with a coastline, you have some more options.

West coast is going to be tight. The OR and WA programs are all competitive. California programs, compared to the rest of the country, are all competitive. Most (?all) programs in desireable parts of CA are competitive.

East coast you have many more options. NY and PA (OH as well if it interests you) have TONS of small programs that do not have a national reputation and are probably less competitive.

Programs that do not share their main site with the main site of a medical school are likely to be less competitive as well.
