I am currently applying to IM programs and will likely pursue a Nephrology fellowship. Besides applying in my home state of CA, are there less competitive or undesirable Nephrology programs out there that have a reputation of going unfilled each year? I have researched that about 95% of Nephrology positions get filled each year so there may not be a clear cut answer to this question. I just wanted to apply to IM programs outside of CA that will increase my chances of eventually obtaining a Nephro spot at that institution. thank you in advance

😱 That is a ******ed plan.

You should go to the best residency program that you like. Then you'll have the best chance of getting into the fellowship that you want to go in. It also won't hurt your chance of getting in the fellowship that never fills. Right?
